Excerpt from Five One Act Plays (Note. - The terms "Left" and "Right" in the stage directions refer to the spectator's left and right, not the actor's.) The scene is the sitting-room of a small house in a lower middle-class district of a provincial town. On the spectator's left is the window, with the blinds down. A sofa is in front of it. On his right is a fireplace with an armchair by it. In the middle of the wall facing the spectator is the door into the passage. To the left of the door a cheap, shabby chest of drawers, to the right a sideboard. In the middle of the room is the table, with chairs round it. Ornaments and a cheap American clock are on the mantelpiece, in the hearth a kettle. By the sideboard a pair of gaudy new carpet slippers. The table is partly laid for tea, and the necessaries for the meal are on the sideboard, as also are copies of an evening paper and of "Tit-Bils" and "Pearson's Weekly." Turning to the left through the door takes you to the front door; to the right, upstairs. In the passage a hat-stand is visible. When the curtain rises Mrs. Slater is seen laying the table. She is a vigorous, plump, red-faced vulgar woman, prepared to do any amount of straight talking to get her own way. She is in black, but not in complete mourning. She listens a moment and then goes to the window, opens it and calls into the street. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Yankee Fantasies: Five One-Act Plays For under all the outward dunness of Yankee life, there burns dimly a kind of smothered rebellion against its own chill constraint: a rebellion which blazes up in color, rather than fire, in a variety of human species, of which such a nature as Margaret Fuller's, in Transcendental days, is suggestively an example. Excerpt from What's Wrong With the Drama?: Five One Act Plays It is hard to understand why any author who is capable of writing a good novel should ever write a play; and, as the present state of dramatic literature shows, he usually doesn't. Excerpt from Five One-Act Comedies Lawrence Langner, the author of these plays, is a typical American: he was born in Europe; and like all typical Americans, he is not happy outside New York. If he were a casual American, one who is American merely through accident of birth, he would probably prefer to spend his time in London or Paris, mugging-up European culture in the hope that some of it might stick to him, but since he is a typical American and has wished for Americanization instead of having it wished on him, he spends his time at the unfashionable end of Fifth Avenue, trying to develop a culture which derives, not from Europe, but from Cape Cod. He will not live to see an American culture which does not derive from the Old World, but at least he and the group, whose most interesting member is Mr. Eugene O'Neill, are doing much to make the way easier for a more definitely American culture to establish itself. There are obvious dangers which may overwhelm these pioneers, such as arrogance and argumentativeness and smugness and self-satisfaction and a disproportionate view of things and, above all, a tendency to imagine that the new and disorderly thing is better than the orderly and old; but if the pioneers have sound constitutions, they will survive them.
