Excerpt from A First Year Course in General Science It is not necessary, in this period of the making of high school curricula, to show that, for the first year of a high school, a general course in science is better than a year's study of one branch of science. Without discussion of the advisability of a general course, therefore, the author would state her reasons for the wide choice of subjects considered in this book. For pupils who complete a high school course, the study of general science should be an introduction to any ordinary high school work in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. No pupil can study all of these subjects, but he can learn that they are not separate sciences but branches of science. Whatever branch he studies later, he will find that the course in general science has given him the elements of the other divisions which dovetail into that branch. To suit the needs of pupils who are not able to finish a high school course, this first year science course must present a comprehensive view, though with no attempt to be complete. "The proper study of mankind" for the pupil at the age of twelve to fourteen years seems to be the world of which he is a part. The fact that the earth, important as it is to man, is not the only nor the greatest body in the universe; that it is not an independent body sufficient unto itself; and that its influence extends to other bodies - these are some of the subjects taken up in the first chapters. Excerpt from General Science The object in such a course of study as in all other courses of study should be to teach the pupil to live, regard less of whether he withdraws from school at an early date or whether he continues his education through the high school and college. We should always be teaching a pupil what he needs and what he can use and a general science course well taught fulfils this ideal admirably. Excerpt from General Science First Course This book is intended to offer a scientific explanation for the many and varied experiences which pupils of high school age have had and to create a desire for further knowledge of scientific subjects. There is a growing desire among science teachers to have a general introductory course in which the fundamental principles of science and of scientific study are presented in such a way that pupils will acquire the desire for a systematic study of the special branches of science. There are also many high schools in which only a year or so can be devoted to the subject of science. In these a general course giving an explanation of the pupils experiences with suggestions of how to acquire further information will be most valuable. In many city high schools a number of courses are offered in which no science subject is required. Many of the larger cities are now adding a half-year of general science to these courses in which special science subjects are not required, thus giving such pupils as in the commercial courses an understanding of every-day phenomena and some idea of the laws of health. This book is intended to meet these various needs. After having taught various phases of science, including General Science, for several years and having experimented on the order of arrangement of the subject-matter and the method of presentation, the author has concluded that the arrangement of the material as presented in this book is most effective in securing the following results: First. A desire to grow strong in body and mind and to remain free from disease and to avoid the use of stimulants and narcotics is created. Excerpt from Introduction to General Science: With Experiments However much we may theorize, and try to impress the youth with the proper conception of man's place in nature, the individual young person will continue to consider himself as the center of the universe. Immediate needs and close surroundings are what interest him. It is not until he has learned about these, and has followed back to their sources and causes some of the phenomena which have seemed simple and matter of fact, that he begins to realize that the distant forces have more effect upon his existence than the near-by, everyday happenings. Perhaps it is well, then, at the beginning of science study, to take his point of view, and lead him to follow each apparently simple need or desire, and to arouse in him the habit of seeking for a cause, and looking beyond the present and immediate to the future and the ultimate. It may be truly said that in a General Science course, "All roads lead to Rome," for the course may be commenced anywhere, and it will lead to a study of all science. In fact, if the pun may be forgiven, in a General Science course, "All roads lead to roam," and the pupil, after he is started, needs but to be guided. That is the purpose of this book. It is not easy to teach a course in general science successfully. There is always the temptation to specialize in some particular part, usually the part which the teacher likes best, and about which he knows most. If this temptation is not resisted, the course ceases to be general. The value of a General Science course is twofold. Excerpt from A First Course in Physics The course presented in this book, and in the List of Labora tory Experiments, which is published in a separate volume, has grown out of the actual needs of the elementary work in physics in the University of Chicago, particularly in the University High School of the School of Education and the affiliated secondary schools. Its most characteristic features have been on trial for three or four years in more than a score of different secondary schools in various parts of the country.
