Excerpt from Finding-List of Music In biography the material has been limited to composers included in the A. L. A. Catalog. This restriction is arbitrary, but the list still includes all the material in the card catalogue relating to the best known composers, and occupies, as it is, about one-fourth of the whole pamphlet. Excerpt from Woman in Music Its illustration has been made still more com plete by additional stories of composers whose success has been due in some degree to the influence of woman. The work has been written in the leisure hours of other pursuits, and of necessity is compiled from the writer's musical readings. A long list of authorities has been consulted for facts bearing upon the sub ject and, so far as is known to the writer, only the highest have been laid under contribution. As a well-stocked musical library is something of a rarity in this country, he ventures to hope that his compilations, and his comments thereon, will be of interest to the musical student, and possibly of value to the general public. Excerpt from The History of Music: A Reference-List or Syllabus of Periods, Topics and Authorities for Classes and Private Students The musical development of this period was confined to Europe, and chiefly to Italy, France, Germany, the Low Countries, and the British Isles. But the differences of attainment and of custom between different countries were often great. As the centuries passed, the center of musical activity and authority moved often, being transferred at certain important epochs from one nation to another. But the number of independent centers steadily increased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Guide to the Formation of a Music Library Which will form practical guides to the purchase of the best books in the various classes dealt with. There are, no doubt, many excellent guides already in the market but, for the most part, they are too general, and, so far as the Editor is aware, not one of them has been prepared by practical librarians or persons who have learnt the true needs of the public by daily intercourse with them at the library counter. Excerpt from The American History and Encyclopedia of Music A dictionary of any language is properly supposed to contain all words in use in that language and also words which have been used in time past, but which have become obsolete. These Obsolete words are included in order that the development and history of the language may be studied, and, for this reason, they are a very important part of such a work. This should also be true of a musical dictionary, as many terms which are not in use at the present time are of great value in the study Of the history Of music and also for a thorough understanding of Old musical manuscripts. With this idea in mind, the list of terms given in this dictionary have been compiled, including not only obsolete terms but also as far as possible equivalents in the various languages. For this reason, the number of terms given in this dictionary is greater than that found in any other musical dictionary extant, numbering as it does, about fourteen thousand definitions. In all definitions, the aim has been to use only the simplest and clearest English, so that the definitions would be readily understood by the ordinary reader, as well as the most finished musician. This plan has been carried out, even in the definitions of terms related to such difficult subjects as Theory and Composition. The work contains a number of special features not covered in any other musical dictionary. Among them being, Dances, National Songs, Poetic Meters, Modes and the Parts of the Mass. Each of these has been defined under the general term and also each Specific dance, song, meter, etc., has been included in its alphabetical place.
