Excerpt from Fighting in France Ell, Leon, it looks as if there was going to be a fight around here pretty soon. Right you are, Earl. That suits me all right though and from the way the rest of the men are acting it seems to suit them too. Earl and Leon Platt, two American boys in the army of the French Republic, were seated outside their quarters behind the fighting line. The scene was in Champagne, one of the provinces Of France that already had witnessed some Of the heaviest fighting of the Big War. Excerpt from Fighting France Although he has taken a forceful part in pos sibly the greatest intellectual controversy that has ever raged among men, he has from first to last been the gentleman and it has been his quiet dig nity and gentleness that has added force to all that he has written and uttered, especially at the time when America was the greatest neutral forum of public opinion. Excerpt from The Fight With France for North America The subject of this volume will, for the most part, I have reason to think, possess at least the merit of novelty for the general reader. The oblivion to which in this country the American War of Independence has been consigned is at least comprehensible. It had few dramatic features, and for us was not glorious, either in motive or conduct. But the earlier war with the French power in America was not only rich in picturesque detail and dramatic situation, but formed an important part of the most glorious and most epoch-making struggle in which Great Britain was ever engaged. Yet no English writer, using the term in its narrow sense, has seriously touched the subject since Warburton, early in the century, published his two admirable volumes on the Conquest of Canada. The well-known Canadian historian, the late Mr. Kingsford, has devoted a great part of volumes III. and IV. in his exhaustive history of the Dominion to the period in question. But it is idle to speak of what may be called in general terms books of reference (however interesting to the student), when the fascinating pages of the brilliant American, Francis Parkman, are only known to so comparatively small a circle of English readers. Excerpt from French Literature of the Great War The output of French war literature has been very great. This may not seem surprising when one thinks of the importance of the crisis through which France has just passed, but it is so when one realizes how that country had to exert all its strength to keep itself from being submerged; literature in such circumstances, is more than ever a luxury. Excerpt from Letters on the War: Between Germany and France Do you know what it is that people here are afraid Of Some of our Politicians, to whom I do not belong, profess to believe in the existence of a plot of long standing between the Cabinets of Paris and Florence. They think that just as France has been forced into a war against us, SO it will be with Italy, unless Italian citizens prove themselves to be stronger and wiser than the French have done. And do you know what the friends of Italy reply to his Sf Translated from the Italian by I. C. They say, AS for the Italian Cabinet, anything is possible; but as for the Italian people, they will sup port the Germans, and offer an invincible obstacle to any such policy. Still, to say the truth, we are not entirely safe. It is only too easy to deceive a people; and I do not feel convinced that your countrymen recognize the serious ness of this impending danger, or that they are on the alert in looking out for it. Excerpt from A Journey Through France in War Time Of all that has been written, or is to be written, by Americans concerning the tragedy overwhelming the Old World, much must naturally be descriptive of conditions in France, since that country is, among those affected by military occupation, most accessible and most closely in sympathy with American ideals and American history.
