After Evgeny Zamiatin emigrated from the USSR in 1931, he was systematically airbrushed out of Soviet literary history, despite the central role he had played in the cultural life of Russia’s northern capital for nearly twenty years. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, his writings have gradually been rediscovered in Russia, but with his archives scattered between Russia, France, and the USA, the project of reconstructing the story of his life has been a complex task. This book, the first full biography of Zamiatin in any language, draws upon his extensive correspondence and other documents in order to provide an account of his life which explores his intimate preoccupations, as well as uncovering the political and cultural background to many of his works. It reveals a man of strong will and high principles, who negotiated the political dilemmas of his day—including his relationship with Stalin—with great shrewdness.

One of the challenges facing the writer is keeping up with developments in the information age. While Command, Control, and the Common Defense provides a historical perspective on a contemporary problem, it was written in the late l980s; since then, the end of the Cold War and the American experience in the Gulf War have provided some fundamentally new perspectives of their own. Re-written history has its own pitfalls; a better solution was to leave the original content intact and to add as an epilogue a chapter which originally appeared in a 1995 anthology on the Gulf War. Both works have, of course, been edited for consistency. Finally, there is reason to ponder in the light of more contemporary developments one of the major points in that original work: that the tight integration demanded by emerging command and control technologies often runs afoul of existing command structures and theories of warfare. As I completed the revisions to this edition while serving on special assignment with the NATO Implementation Force in Bosnia, there were daily reminders of the truth of that statement.

World War II lasted six years. That's 2,194 days. What happened in those six years? In this new "diary," author Richard Binder takes a radical new approach to telling the story of the worst conflict humanity has ever experienced. Instead of trying to cover everything, he relates the happenings of just 366 days, the length of a single year. Choosing events great and small from the beginning of the war to its bitter end, he gives you a fascinating and sometimes shocking look at things you know from your high-school history and things you may never have heard of.
