Excerpt from Experimental Studies on Diphtheric Immunity: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Ogden Graduate School of Science in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Department of Bacteriology) From one to three days before death, rats frequently show a peculiar tendency to keep one or both hind-legs strongly flexed. This condition is not a true paralysis, such as 18 seen in guinea - pigs from the effects of late diphtheritic intoxication, for upon strong stimuli the animal is able to extend the limb. Another point of difference is that here the fiexors predominate, while in the guinea - pig it is the extensors. Nevertheless, it may be analogous to that of guinea-pigs in that it is due to the presence of toxone in the toxin, because these pareses were quite common with one toxin but wholly lacking with another.
