"The Expanding Opportunities in Ocean Sciences conference was held at the McGrew Conference Center at Hampton University (HU), Hampton, Virginia on September 11 and 12, 1995. Eighty-six participants from state and private, majority and minority colleges and universities, government agencies and research laboratories attended this conference hosted by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). A complete list of those attending is provided in the Appendices. Faculty, students, researchers and administrators came with the expressed purpose of strengthening the links between historically black and minority-serving college and university (HBMSCU) undergraduates and institutions with oceanic graduate programs"--Overview of the conference program.

Ocean science connects a global community of scientists in many disciplines - physics, chemistry, biology, geology and geophysics. New observational and computational technologies are transforming the ability of scientists to study the global ocean with a more integrated and dynamic approach. This enhanced understanding of the ocean is becoming ever more important in an economically and geopolitically connected world, and contributes vital information to policy and decision makers charged with addressing societal interests in the ocean. Science provides the knowledge necessary to realize the benefits and manage the risks of the ocean. Comprehensive understanding of the global ocean is fundamental to forecasting and managing risks from severe storms, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and managing ocean resources. In the United States, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is the primary funder of the basic research which underlies advances in our understanding of the ocean. Sea Change addresses the strategic investments necessary at NSF to ensure a robust ocean scientific enterprise over the next decade. This survey provides guidance from the ocean sciences community on research and facilities priorities for the coming decade and makes recommendations for funding priorities.

"This, the third Expanding Opportunities in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Conference was significant in several ways. First, it was a follow-up and extension of the work of two previous Expanding Opportunities Conferences held in 1995 and 1999. Second, it provided a forum for the dedication in memory of Dr. Nancy Foster who championed the Expanding Opportunities cause beginning with the first Conference in 1995. Third, the number of participants in attendance exceeded each of the first two Conferences which indicates that the issues of diversity and true equal opportunity are crucial for all in our schools and businesses, and, more generally, in society and our nation. Thus, Conference participants came to work actively on developing strategic actions to expand diversity and opportunities for individuals from traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups in the marine, atmospheric, and environmental fields"--Executive Summary.

This encyclopedia provides the most complete treatment to date of the accomplishments of African American scientists—and the struggles of African Americans to find their place in the scientific community. This comprehensive reference work sheds new light on an aspect of African American life that is often overlooked. More than a summary of individuals and accomplishments, African Americans in Science: An Encyclopedia of People and Progress explores the entire experience of African Americans seeking a place in the scientific community—not just the triumphs but the frustrations, discriminations, and the efforts to support (and sometimes impede) African American scientists. African Americans in Science offers alphabetically organized entries in three areas: the contributions of African Americans in over 30 different fields of science and medicine, schools and organizations that played a role in the development of African American scientists, and additional topics related to African American scientists. No other reference offers such a complete and up-to-date portrait of the pivotal work of African Americans across the spectrum of scientific research and what it took to achieve it.

The oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, and are critical components of Earth’s climate system. This new edition of Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences, Six Volume Set summarizes the breadth of knowledge about them, providing revised, up to date entries as well coverage of new topics in the field. New and expanded sections include microbial ecology, high latitude systems and the cryosphere, climate and climate change, hydrothermal and cold seep systems. The structure of the work provides a modern presentation of the field, reflecting the input and different perspective of chemical, physical and biological oceanography, the specialized area of expertise of each of the three Editors-in-Chief. In this framework maximum attention has been devoted to making this an organic and unified reference. Represents a one-stop. organic information resource on the breadth of ocean science research Reflects the input and different perspective of chemical, physical and biological oceanography, the specialized area of expertise of each of the three Editors-in-Chief New and expanded sections include microbial ecology, high latitude systems and climate change Provides scientifically reliable information at a foundational level, making this work a resource for students as well as active researches
