Friedrich Nietzsche wrote this short work translated either as "A Call to the Germans", "An Admonition to the Germans" or "An Exhortation to the Germans" (original German "Mahnruf an die Deutschen") at Richard Wagner's request to help raise funds for the construction of his Bayreuth Theater. This letter is sometimes called his "Admonition". Here we have a fascinating look at Wagner and Nietzsche's healthy relationship before Nietzsche turned on him and started a life-long crusade of condemning Wagner and his art. He penned this letter on October 25th, 1873, only a matter of months before his break with Wagner. The first time this work was printed was in 1873 in Basel by G. A. Bonfantini. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. This provides the reader a holistic view of this very enigmatic philosopher as both an introduction and an exploration of Nietzsche's works; from his general understanding of his philosophic project to an exploration of the depths of his metaphysics and unique contributions. This edition contains: • An Afterword by the Translator on the history, impact and intellectual legacy of Nietzsche • Translation notes on the original German manuscript • An index of Philosophical concepts used by Nietzsche with a focus on Existentialism and Phenomenology • A complete chronological list of Nietzsche's entire body of works • A detailed timeline of Nietzsche's life journey

A journal from his earliest years, this is a wistful, deeply nostalgic commentary on his earliest memories, his memories of going to church, encountering music (sometimes published as a separate work "On Music"), and his large family. It is openly theistic, romantic in style, and reminiscent of the Goethe-Schiller age in which the young Nietzsche grew up. In 1858, he wrote an addendum titled "looking back", which is included here. These journals were first published in the volume "Gesammelte Werke" edited by Peter Gast (a pseudonym for Heinrich Köselitz, a close associate of Nietzsche) and Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche (Nietzsche's sister). They were included in the second series of these collected works under the title "Philologica," which was published in 1897 and several editions after that. This was part of the effort to compile and publish Nietzsche's unpublished manuscripts and lecture notes after his death. This new 2024 translation from the original German manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. Known for his critiques of traditional European morality and religion, Nietzsche's ideas on the "will to power" and the "Übermensch" have influenced a wide range of philosophical, literary, and psychological thought including thinkers such as Michael Foucault and the entire Postmodern religion.

The Cult of Art in Nazi Germany presents a new interpretation of National Socialism, arguing that art in the Third Reich was not simply an instrument of the regime, but actually became a source of the racist politics upon which its ideology was founded. Through the myth of the "Aryan race," a race pronounced superior because it alone creates culture, Nazism asserted art as the sole raison d'être of a regime defined by Hitler as the "dictatorship of genius." Michaud shows the important link between the religious nature of Nazi art and the political movement, revealing that in Nazi Germany art was considered to be less a witness of history than a force capable of producing future, the actor capable of accelerating the coming of a reality immanent to art itself.

"The Florentine Treatise on Homer and Hesiod, their Ancestry and their Competition" is one of Nietzsche's early Philology works, before he fully turned towards Philosophy, "Das florentinische Tractat über Homer und Hesiod" is an academic commentary on the Florentine Treatise (Βιβλιοθήκη της Φλωρεντίας), which has an unknown original author. This work by Nietzsche was also printed in Latin instead of German the following year, titled "Certamen quod dicitur Homeri et Hesiodi". The original manuscript, which Nietzsche analyzes and comments on, is a story of the life together of Homer and Hesiod, written around an account of a contest between them, said to have taken place at Chalcis, where they presented their best poetry. Hesiod is declared the winner of this competition between poets and philosophers. The crowd is said to have favored Homer. The passages selected from the manuscript show Homer as the poet of war, Hesiod as the poet of peace. The story is familiar to Varro and later writers, and is ignored in the famous Lives of Homer. The treatise dates from the Antonine period, but much of it is taken verbatim from an earlier source lost to time. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. "Untimely Reflections" (Original German manuscript: Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen) is a collection of four essays in which Nietzsche critiques various aspects of contemporary culture and society, including education, history, and nationalism. He calls for a break from the conventional attitudes and values, urging individuals to think independently and embrace a more "real" way of life. These essays were part of Nietzsche's critique of German culture at the time, targeting various figures and cultural perspectives prevalent during his era: 1. "David Strauss: The Confessor and the Writer" (1873) - Nietzsche criticizes the German culture of his time, especially the writer David Strauss and his book "The Old and the New Faith: A Confession." This essay was Nietzsche's response to what he saw as the superficial and complacent nature of German intellectual culture after the Franco-Prussian War. 2. "On the Use and Abuse of History for Life" (1874) - This essay discusses the problem of historical knowledge and its relationship to the health and vitality of human life. Nietzsche argues that an excessive historical consciousness, which he sees as prevalent among his contemporaries, paralyzes living culture and its creative power. 3. "Schopenhauer as Educator" (1874) - Nietzsche articulates his admiration for Arthur Schopenhauer and presents him as a model for revitalizing the German cultural landscape. This essay reflects Nietzsche's reflections on the role of great individuals in the cultivation of culture. 4. "Richard Wagner in Bayreuth" (1876) - This essay is an analysis and celebration of Richard Wagner, whom Nietzsche deeply admired at the time. It examines Wagner's cultural significance and his efforts to revive German culture through his Bayreuth Festival. These four essays, first published separately, were published by Nietzsche as "Untimely Reflections" together as a collection in 1876. This included all four essays that Nietzsche had written between 1873 and 1876, gathered under the series titled "Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen". This is a new 2024 translation from this original 1876 (first published in 1896) German manuscript containing a new Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. This is the first translation of Fichte's addresses to the German nation for almost 100 years. The series of 14 speeches, delivered whilst Berlin was under French occupation after Prussia's disastrous defeat at the Battle of Jena in 1806, is widely regarded as a founding document of German nationalism, celebrated and reviled in equal measure. Fichte's account of the distinctiveness of the German people and his belief in the native superiority of its culture helped to shape German national identity throughout the nineteenth century and beyond. With an extensive introduction that puts Fichte's argument in its intellectual and historical context, this edition brings an important and seminal work to a modern readership. All of the usual series features are provided, including notes for further reading, chronology, and brief biographies of key individuals.

"The Happy Science", sometimes translated as "The Gay Science" or "The Joyful Science" is a pivotal work in which Nietzsche further develops his critique of traditional values and his vision of a life-affirming philosophy beyond the Pessimistic outlook on reality he inherited from Schopenhauer. The book is known for its proclamation of the "death of God" and the challenges it poses to the foundations of morality and religion. In this work, Nietzsche emphasizes the importance of embracing uncertainty and creating one's own values, advocating for a joyful and creative approach to life. The Happy Science is notable for its aphoristic style and its blend of poetic and philosophical elements, echoing Nietzsche's belief in the interconnectedness of art and philosophy, and is one of the most elegant books of Nietzsche. Written while he was living in Genoa, Italy, the text is notable for its aphoristic style (borrowed from Schopenhauer, who borrowed from Rabelais and Erasmus) and its exploration of themes such as the affirmation of life, the death of God, and eternal recurrence. Nietzsche's concept of the "happy science" refers to a joyful and liberated approach to philosophy, one that embraces the uncertainty and chaos of existence with a playful and creative spirit. The book includes famous passages such as "The Madman," which proclaims the death of God and examines the profound implications of this event for Western civilization. Camus would go on to create a watered-down version of this "positivist nihilism," all based on Schopenhauer's pessimism. The text marks a transition from Nietzsche's earlier, more skeptical and critical writings to a more affirmative and constructive phase of his philosophy. It foreshadows the themes he would develop in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, including the superman and the will to power. The work's cheerful and provocative tone reflects Nietzsche's call for a reassessment of values and a new way of thinking that transcends traditional moral and metaphysical constraints. "Die fröhliche Wissenschaft" was first published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1882 by the publishing house E. W. Fritzsch. This is a new 2024 translation from this original 1882 German manuscript (first manuscript published in 1901) and contains a new Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This extra material amplifies upon the text to give the reader a holistic view of this enigmatic philosopher. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. In this groundbreaking examination of the symbolic strategies used to prepare troops for imminent combat, Keith Yellin offers an interdisciplinary look into the rhetorical discourse that has played a prominent role in warfare, history, and popular culture from antiquity to the present day. Battle Exhortation focuses on one of the most time-honored forms of motivational communication, the encouraging speech of military commanders, to offer a pragmatic and scholarly evaluation of how persuasion contributes to combat leadership and military morale. In illustrating his subject's conventions, Yellin draws from the Bible, classical Greece and Rome, Spanish conquistadors, and American military forces. Yellin is also interested in how audiences are socialized to recognize and anticipate this type of communication that precedes difficult team efforts. To account for this dimension he probes examples as diverse as Shakespeare's Henry V, George C. Scott's portrayal of General George S. Patton, and team sports.
