When we face trouble, feel joy, or just want spiritual inspiration, the Bible's Book of Psalms gives us wisdom and comfort. Rev. J.W. Gregg Meister shows us in The Psalms: The Prayer Book of Jesus that Jesus Himself turned to the psalms for strength and guidance while He walked on earth. Meister's fresh reflections open up the Book of Psalms for contemporary readers with helpful strategies for praying the psalms with Christian resolve. Grounded in his rich experiences as Presbyterian pastor, entrepreneur, and mission-minded videographer in Latin America and Israel, Meister offers valuable insights into the context, content, and claim of selected psalms. Written with clarity and compassion, Meister's perceptive meditations on these psalms manage the rare combination of deepening both understanding and faith.

Throughout history, poets have felt the ancient pull of the sea, exploring the full range of mankind's nautical fears, dreams, and longings. The colorful legends of the sea-pirates and mermaids, phantom ships and the sunken city of Atlantis-have inspired as many imaginations as have the realities of lighthouses and shipwrecks, of icebergs and frothing foam and seaweed. This marvelous collection includes classics old and new, from Homer and Milton to Plath and Merwin. Here are Tennyson's seductive sea-fairies next to Poe's beloved Annabel Lee. Here is Coleridge's darkly brooding "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" alongside the grandeur of Shakespeare's "Full Fathom Five." And here is Masefield's "I must go down to the seas again" alongside Cavafy's "Ithaka" and Stevens's "The Idea of Order at Key West." In the wide variety of lyrics collected here-sonnets and sea chanteys, ballads and hymns and prayers-we feel the encompassing power of our planet's restless

CHAPTER 11 THE FIFTH ENGLISH PRATER BOOK THE Savoy Confer-ence came to an end in July, 1661: before the Christmas of that year Convocation had com-pleted the Fifth Prayer Book, which is the book in use to-day in the Church of England; and the next year this was annexed to the Act of Uniformity. The preced-ing chapter has, we hope, shown the conditions un-der which the new Prayer Book was produced and the principles which actu-ated the revisers. These are stated with much clearness in the first of the present prefaces to the English Prayer Book, which was then added, and is called simply "The Preface." It was written by Sanderson, of Lincoln. Bishop Sanderson. Bishop The Principal Changes The changes described in this Preface are--I. (direcTions) for the better direction of the officiant, 2. (verbal) the alteration of obsolete phrases, 3. (scripture) the use of the Authorized Version, especially for the Epistles and Gospels, 4. (additions) some new prayers and thanksgivings, especially for use at Sea, and an order for the Baptism of Adults. These alterations are about 600 in number. Let us endeavour to summarize the more important under the four heads just mentioned. 1. Directions. Among the more important are: a rubric providing for the use of anthems at choir offices "in Quires and Places where they sing "; at Holy Communion, the rubric giving direction for the fraction and other manual acts, previously left to tradition, and two rubrics ordering that what remains of the Sacrament after the Communion shall be covered with a linen veil, and afterwards be reverently consumed; in Confirmation the Catechism was...

2014 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Rebecca Beard was widely known in the post-war period as a gifted speaker and teacher in the field of spiritual therapy. Her first book, "Everyman's Search," went through many editions because it offered practical suggestions to those seeking a deeper awareness of the power of God in their lives. Dr. Beard practiced medicine for twenty years until she recognized the tremendous influence that thoughts and emotions have upon the physical body. Her medical experience and research led her to the conviction that thoughts and emotions are largely responsible for many types of illness, and that by understanding the thoughts and redirecting the emotions, with the ever present help of prayer, lives can be re-molded and bodies healed.
