The individual who contributes anything to the more wide diffusion of the light which is from heaven, among the inhabitants Of the earth, promotes that cause, ele vates the human character, and brings the world under Obligation to him as a benefactor at the same time he adds a note to the anthem once sung by angels Glory to God in the highest On earth peace; good will to ward men. In order to do this, it is not indispensable that new truth be discovered. The bible contains an entire and perfect theology; and to take of the things of Christ and show them to men, is enough. This the Christian may do, as the instrument Of the Holy Spirit. It is a no less noble or useful work to help a Chris tian brother to clearer and brighter light, than to reflect the light on the darkness Of unregenerated minds. The main design Of this book is, to communicate important truths to scholars already in the school of Christ. Aware how many are disposed to attribute any opinion which contradicts their own to such a partial, one sided investigation as they practise themselves, I determined to form my judgment entirely by the study of the scriptures, and of such authors as advocate the baptism of infants. To that determination I have adhered. And not having read a single baptist book or tract, I publish the following work as an independent testimony to the exclusive right of believers to Christian baptism. Undoubt edly I might have enriched its pages by an examination of the able and excellent authors who have written on the same side; and by the use of their reasonings and researches might have escaped some of the errors of detail into which it is possible that, in the discussion of a question so extensive and so. No ill-natured and contentious remarks shall be made on any denomina tion of Christians. What is believed to be agreeable to the will of God. Shall be dispassionately stated; and the deci sion left to every reader. Should the writer succeed in producing strong arguments, and any under their pressure should be disposed to raise a cry of persecution, the candid of all parties will know how to appreciate this; and will not pass censure on one who only vindicates the truth, and op poses what he believes to be error. And should the effort be feeble - telam zmbcllc sine i'ciu - he hopes that no offmu e will be taken, at an honest attempt to promote the truth, by those who agree with him; and surely his brethren. The Society of Friends, by the rejection of water baptism, are generally supposed to have insulated themselves from nearly the whole Christian world. So momentous indeed does this rejection appear in the view of many Christian professors, that they are ready to unchristianize the society on that account. They can scarcely suppose that a community who disregard what they consider so obvious an ordinance, as that of baptism by water, can believe in the truth and importance of the holy scriptures. A little attention, however, to the subject will evince, that Friends have been adjudged to deny the holy scriptures, because they give to some portions of the sacred volume, a different construction from that which some other professors adopt.
