Excerpt from Entomological News, 1943, Vol. 54 This specimen was collected June 6, 1935 along a carriage road of about three-quarters oi a mile, between the Breakneck and Witches' Hole Pond. According to Doctor Procter, both Of these ponds are for the greater part bogs with quite a lot of Sphagnum, but not what would be called true Sphagnum bogs, and this carriage road between them is a favorite 'hawking' place for dragonflies. Excerpt from Entomological News, Vol. 12: October, 1911 It was with great regret that we heard Of the death Of our leading Dipterist. There are many who will miss his cheer. And his help in the determination of their finds in Diptera, and the United States National Museum has lost a valuable mem ber of its staff. He had been interested in insects as a young man on his father's farm in Pleasant Valley, and he contributed liberally to the literature Of applied entomology. In 1881 he became Assistant State Entomologist Of Illinois. But was compelled to remove to California for his health, where in 1885 he be came field agent for the Division Of Entomology 01' the United States Department Of Agriculture. And continued as such until 1893, when he was transferred to \vashington as an assistant to the Entomologist oi the Department. In 1896 he was raised to the Office of Honorary Custodian Of Diptera of the U. S. National Museum, which he held at the time of his death. The W orld's Fair held at Chicago in 1893, brought together an unsurpassed amount of excellent display material suitable for museum purposes. There had been an era of artistic and industrial development on earth and competition and rivalry had led every nation to produce and exhibit its best. About this time a group of public-spirited citizens decided that at the close of the Exposition, the most important and valuable of these exhibits should remain in Chicago. Thus on August 21, 18-93, was founded the original Columbian Museum. A short time later the name was lchanged to the Field Columbian Museum and the most beautiful of the World's Fair buildings, the Palace of Arts in Jackson Park, was secured as a temporary home. This building was occupied for some twenty - seven years, however. In 1905 the museum limited its scope to the departments of Anthropology, Botany, Geology and Zoology and the name was finally and definitely designated as the Field Museum of Natural History in honor of Mr. Marshall Field, the Chicago merchant prince whose endowments made it possible.
