Excerpt from English Poetry From Blake to Browning 'Poetry and criticism being by no means the universal concern of the world, but only the affair of idle men who write in their closets, and of idle men who read there.' This is how Pope, writing in 1716, felt it to be with poetry and criticism, that they were exclusively the affair of a comparatively small class, the leisured and cultivated few. The felling of to-day is substantially the same. Readers have greatly increased in numbers since Pope wrote, but they have not criticism; they leave these, together with many other things, out of view, making no secret of their preference for consigned to oblivion to-morrow. Excerpt from William Blake His Poetry This is to some extent recognized by writers Of histories and text-books of literature, and by editors of selections from the works of our poets; for place is always given by them to a certain amount of biographical material. But in the histories and text-books the biography of a given writer stands by itself, and his work has to be sought elsewhere, the student being left to make the connexion for himself; while even in our current editions of selections there is little systematic attempt to link biography, step by step, with production. Poems of William Blake, Songs of Innocence. William Blake (28 November 1757 - 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. What he called his prophetic works were said by 20th century critic Northrop Frye to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language".

Excerpt from Browning's Poems (Selected) The eleven minor poems of Robert Browning to be considered here are, with the exception of One Word M ore, so many examples of dramatic or objective poetry. As soon as the personality of an author obtrudes itself into his work, that work ceases to be dramatic and be comes subjective or lyrical, as in the case of the poem mentioned above, in which we hear Browning himself in his own person addressing his beloved wife, Elizabeth Barrett. Subjective poetry, in the strictest sense of the term, is very unusual with Browning, although his intense personality is always to be felt, yet seldom seen or heard, in all he has written. Of the various forms of dramatic poetry Browning is most interested in the dramatic monologue, which we shall describe at some length when we come to discuss the construction of his verse. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of William Blake: A New and Verbatim Text From the Manuscript Engraved and Letterpress Originals The literary remains of William Blake fall into three broad and generally recognized divisions, poetry, prose, and the prophetic books. The present work is a complete collection of Blake's poems, including all lyrical and metrical pieces scattered throughout his prose works and visionary writings. This edition furnishes readers with a new text, literally reproduced from the original manuscript, engraved, and printed sources. The primary object has been to recover and present Blake's own version of his poetry without the customary attempts at emendation. Apart from the natural question whether most editors of Blake are com petent to effect improvement in the works of a man of singular and individual genius, it may perhaps be pertinent to recall that no writer would have more strongly resented interference with his own mode of expression than he who held that 'every minute particular is holy' and that 'no one can finish so high as the original inventor.' Even if we assume, with one of these critics, that what he styles a 'disservice' is done to the poet by reprinting his works without correction, there may still be some so curious as to desire to refer to his poems in the form which commended itself to their author. That such a restoration of text should be necessary at all in the case of a modern writer whose works have passed through many editions may seem to require explanation. The reasons, however, lie on the surface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Selections From the Symbolical Poems of William Blake Blake, like Berkeley, believed that mind is everything and matter non existent; hence for him the brain of man was an arena at once $5511 Ea lantern and great as the universe, and in the brain of man the events of his poems occur. In that arena, where a less stormy genius had before located Pilgrim's Progress, move Titan Miltonic figures, reducing worlds to chaos or chaos to worlds. They are our passions, reasonings, impulses, godlike, demonlike, groping, erring, aspiring, dreaming and suffering. Chief among them tower the four Zoas or mental kings, spirits of intellect, emotion, sensuousness, and energy, and the beautiful, godlike figure of imaginative insight. Around them move such a confusing swarm of lesser figures as could be paralleled only from Brahmin cosmogony. Excerpt from A Day With the Poet Browning But there had always been a frankly cos mopolitan spirit in Browning, - no touch of parochialism or insularity. In the magnificent gallery of portrait studies, no two alike, which his poems present to us, the nationalities are legion. Yet Italian scenes predominate; for Browning could gauge, with the unerring instinct of genius, all the subtleties of the Italian temperament. So we come, at every turn, across some ardent vision of the South, here, Waring sailing out of Trieste under the furled lateen-sail; and there, Fra Lippo Lippi tracking lutestrings, laughs, and whifts of song down the darkling streets of Florence. The Patriot, riding into Brescia, roses, roses all the way, and the Duke of Ferrara, that typical representative of a whole phase of civilisation, discussing My Last Duchess and her foolishness.
