Excerpt from Bird Life in England IN these pages I have attempted to give a somewhat uncon ventional view of bird life in England and her sister kingdoms to north and west. The naturalist may smile at a monograph so incomplete as this, but in Yarrel, Morris, Gould, Grey, and a score of others, he will find exhaustive authors who have gone with infinite care and pains through the Whole list of British birds and epitomized each. No attempt of this sort has been made here. There are, to begin with, more than three hundred birds nesting with greater or lesser frequency in our islands, and even at such modest allotment as two pages to each, we should have at once a bulky volume of six hundred pages. But the greater part of these wild fowl of meadow and marsh are the curator's birds alone, and lovers of country side and the life of copse and dingle can only hope to meet with but a very much reduced selection from the formidable list which professors and students have put together. It is of these birds, the more familiar ones, I write. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Annals of Bird Life: A Year-Book of British Ornithology I have so arranged the present volume that the student may readily acquaint himself with what is going on among the birds during every month of the year. I make no pretensions to completeness; the subject is too vast and varied to be exhausted in a single volume. In many cases the dates given can of necessity only be approximate ones - an allowance of a few days either way must often be made for differ ences of latitude, state of the weather, and other local in uences. Excerpt from A Concise Handbook of British Birds Although the urgent need for compression has prohibited the author from presenting this work as a complete natural history of British Birds, yet he believes that as a handy textbook for reference it has had as yet no rivals. It has been brought up to date as far as possible, every species on the British list having been included, and nearly all described, while the records Of the rarer species have been carefully collected, and in the case Of the common species a tolerably complete life-history has been given. The numbering Of the genera and species will also probably prove Of service. The length Of a bird is (unless otherwise stated) measured from the base Of bill to tip Of tail, all measure ments being in inches and hundredth-parts. The description first given is (unless expressly mentioned) that Of a bird in breeding plumage, 'but the seasonal changes, if appreciable, are added. The habitat may be taken as meaning the region inhabited during the breeding season, but the winter range Of migratory species has usually been added. If brackets enclose a describer's name they indicate that the generic name adopted is not that used by the describer. Excerpt from Stories of Bird Life MY purpose in writing these stories and sketches of birds has been that I might make others acquainted with the ways of some of the wild birds which have been of so much interest to me. Should they serve to give the reader a little more intimate ao quaintance with our feathered neighbors of the field and woodland, my main object will have been accomplished. These stories are not fanciful, but are true to bird life. The Arredondo Sparrow Hawk, ruffle-breast and Socrates were partien lar birds well known to others as to me. In the case of the Bob white family, and Bib-neck, the Plover, I have combined into the lives of a few birds incidents I have known to occur to many. The accounts of Visits to birds' nests, bird colonies and the like are given as they occurred. In the Appendixes some suggestions are offered to the student and the teacher.
