Excerpt from Elements of German Grammar Intended for Beginners As the author predicted, the nature of his third and improved edition of the Elements being more generally understood, the de mand would be considerably increased; this has been evidenced by the call for this fourth edition. Nothing has been attempted to change the character of the original work, but great pains have been bestowed to ren der it as free from error as possible, -some few omissions which the late author must have overlook ed, have been introduced, and, it is hoped, all the inaccuracies of the press removed, which disfigured the former edi tion. The references to the Grammar have been made applicable to the sixth and last edition. Jan. 1838.illustrated: not unfrequently observations will be met with, that had not been adverted to before. The Elements themselves are quoted, together with the Grammar, when ever they extend to a point under discussion. Excerpt from Elements of German Grammar for Review The present volume is not intended to 'be a complete German grammar or to replace the many excellent grammars or books for beginners now on the market. Its primary object is to serve as a guide to the student in reviewing the grammar during the second year, to focus his attention upon the essentials, and to impress these firmly upon his, mind. Hence all unnecessary details have been omitted, and matter of secondary importance has been put in small type or in the notes. The introductory chapter on definitions of grammatical terms has been inserted in the hope that it may relieve the teacher of German of the time - consuming task of teaching the first elements of English grammar. It is hoped that the questions on the various topics may prove a valuable aid in impressing all important points upon the student's mind. The suggested exercises can and ought to be multiplied and varied by the teacher, to give the stu dent not merely a theoretical but also a practical knowledge of German grammar.
