Excerpt from Elements of General Science: Laboratory Problems The development of courses in general science, and their extensive adoption in high schools, has been the most important change in science teaching during the past two decades. In teaching this subject high-school teachers have found it more difficult to secure adequate help in their laboratory, demonstration, and field work than has been true in connection with the text material. While the outline for experimental work requires recognition of the variations in methods and materials used in different schools, it must also be sufficiently specific and comprehensive to serve adequately as a guide to the pupils. This manual has been prepared in order to meet these needs. It uses most of the topics which appear in Caldwell and Eikenberry's "A Laboratory Manual for General Science," but has organized these topics differently and has added to them. The following are special features of this manual: A preliminary paragraph with each problem, giving briefly the setting of the problem so that the pupil begins his work with a measure of appreciation of its significance. Diagrams, sketches, or halftones, as parts of most of the problems, are designed to give suggestions as to setting up apparatus, thus helping to make certain that the experiment is properly performed and at the same time stimulating pupils to invent ways of their own for doing things. In case of most of the illustrations no legends are given, since the directions provide all needed suggestions for proper use of the figures. In a few cases legends are added, but usually the pupil will profit most by use of an illustration as a means of experimentation if a detailed explanation of its significance is omitted. Excerpt from A First Year Course in General Science It is not necessary, in this period of the making of high school curricula, to show that, for the first year of a high school, a general course in science is better than a year's study of one branch of science. Without discussion of the advisability of a general course, therefore, the author would state her reasons for the wide choice of subjects considered in this book. For pupils who complete a high school course, the study of general science should be an introduction to any ordinary high school work in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. No pupil can study all of these subjects, but he can learn that they are not separate sciences but branches of science. Whatever branch he studies later, he will find that the course in general science has given him the elements of the other divisions which dovetail into that branch. To suit the needs of pupils who are not able to finish a high school course, this first year science course must present a comprehensive view, though with no attempt to be complete. "The proper study of mankind" for the pupil at the age of twelve to fourteen years seems to be the world of which he is a part. The fact that the earth, important as it is to man, is not the only nor the greatest body in the universe; that it is not an independent body sufficient unto itself; and that its influence extends to other bodies - these are some of the subjects taken up in the first chapters. Immediate needs and close surroundings are what interest him. It is not until he has learned about these, and has followed back to their sources and causes some of the phenomena which have seemed simple and matter of fact, that he begins to realize that the distant forces have more effect upon his existence than the near-by, everyday happenings. Perhaps it is well, then, at the beginning of science study, to take his point of view, and lead him to follow each apparently simple need or desire, and to arouse in him the habit of seeking for a cause, and looking beyond the present and immediate to the future and the ultimate. It may be truly said that in a General Science course, "All roads lead to Rome," for the course may be commenced anywhere, and it will lead to a study of all science. In fact, if the pun may be forgiven, in a General Science course, "All roads lead to roam," and the pupil, after he is started, needs but to be guided. That is the purpose of this book. It is not easy to teach a course in general science successfully. There is always the temptation to specialize in some particular part, usually the part which the teacher likes best, and about which he knows most.
