It examines specific cultural and societal characteristics of Ethiopia that influence the education of children with disabilities. The book presents findings drawn from interviews with, and participant observation of the schoolchildren, family members, teachers and other “experts”, and places these findings in a cultural-historical context. The multidimensional approach taken allows for, on the one hand, the provision of a historical grounding of the book, explaining the main historical junctures and their implications for education, and the discussion of the role of culture and society as barriers and facilitators of education. On the other hand, it gives the book a more personal angle, allowing the reader to gain insight into what it means to feel like a family, develop a sense of belonging, and tr ying to move toward educational equity.

Education for children with disabilities is an important and current topic on an international level. However, it becomes especially interesting when looking at countries of the majority world (or so-called developing countries) and matters of social inclusion and exclusion. Disability and poverty are often interconnected and lead to a vicious circle of exclusion, poverty, and low living standards. This case gives insight into a recent research study that was conducted on barriers and facilitators that children with disabilities are experiencing in their educational environments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. By using a constructivist approach to grounded theory, it was possible to capture different perspectives on the situation of the children and get a deep insight into existing problems and supportive aspects regarding education. During this research project, I learned a lot about the positive sides as well as the challenging aspects of grounded theory. Having to deal with a different language and culture and different traditions, it was especially hard to find my way in the beginning of the field research. However, applying grounded theory gave me the possibility to clarify issues I did not initially understand. It enabled me to go deeper into the narratives where I found it necessary. This helped me to create a coherent account of the complex phenomenon I studied.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Pedagogy - Nursery Pedagogy, Early Childhood Education, Addis Ababa University (Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia), language: English, abstract: This study was aimed at investigating the implementation of inclusive education in two private kindergartens in Tabor Sub-city, Hawassa City Administration. Early inclusion and intervention has the greatest impact on child’s learning and development. Conducting research on this kind of issue is expected to have a significant role providing insights to improve the practice. Factors that hinder proper implementation of inclusive education in selected private kindergartens had been investigated across this research. To find solution for the problem stated above, all participants who were believed to give rich information were purposively selected. Qualitative research method specifically phenomenological approach was employed and all necessary studies conducted before were critically reviewed. There were about twenty eight key informants involved in the study. They were six children with disabilities, two kindergarten principals, twelve teachers/assistants, six parents and two officers from the centers. Document analysis, semi-structured interview, participant observation and focus group discussion were data gathering tools employed. All raw data were transcribed and narrated in to meaningful report. Even though both kindergartens claim that they are inclusive, finding shows that they are not inclusive. Neither physical nor social environment of both kindergartens was accessible for children with disabilities. Absence of trained manpower, lack of knowledge with regard to inclusion of children with special needs and negative attitude of the parents were factors hindering the implementation of inclusive education in the kindergartens. Findings imply that teachers, principals and parents need awareness raising training, and private kindergartens have to assign special need education teachers so as to promote inclusion of children with disabilities.

In most cases, disabled children grow up learning from their parents that they are not worthy of mixing with other kids their age. People with bodily disabilities have skilled slender chances to enjoy college environments or practices due to fewer priorities given by way of academic providers to problems that might also guide the disabled in particular in developing nations in areas such as curriculums, instructing and studying materials, infrastructure, unique programs such as sports and games, environmental troubles and the normal high-quality of education. According to the Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report 2010 reaching the marginalized youngsters with disabilities remains one of the most important problems leading to huge exclusion of the group from nice schooling.

This maxim has got its way to various international human rights instruments UDHR being the pioneer one. All the instruments but the CRPD has contained provisions with regard to the right to education in a broader context making everyone to be the beneficiaries thereof. The latter, however, contextualized the right to persons with disabilities wherein children with visual impairment (CWVI) are categorized. Ethiopia has ratified all these instruments thereby making them integral parts of its law. By doing so, it has committed itself to work towards the realization of the right to education to the CWVI. As a move to that effect, it has formulated various policies and strategies confirming such right to the group on top of which provide the need to deliver special assistance to the group as their need so requires. Despite all this, however, CWVI are not enjoying such right of them in the required level be it in the country in general or in Addis Ababa in particular (which is the focus of this study). This being the case, this study undertakes to examine the hindrances attributed to the low-level access of the right to CWVI as well as reasons that could account for the low quality of education given to the group. After doing so, it attempts to come up with the possible solutions to be put in place to tackle such hindrances.
