Excerpt from Economic Geology of the Feldspar Deposits of the United States The present bulletin brings together in a single volume all available practical information concerning the commercial feldspar deposits of the United States. Scientific problems are discussed only so far as they are of commercial importance or so far as the discussion may contribute to a general understanding of the deposits. The feldspar localities of Maine were visited by the writer in the summer of 1906, the work being authorized by the United States Geo logical Survey in cooperation with the Maine State Survey Commission. Those of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were visited at various times from 1906 to 1909 under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey. Excerpt from Economic Geology of the United States The following work on the Economic Geology of the United States covers essentially the ground which is gone over in the elementary course in this subject in Cornell University, but it is hoped that it will prove useful as a text-book in other colleges. The mode of arrangement is markedly different from that found in other books on the same subject, in that the nonmetallic minerals are discussed first and the metallic minerals last. This, to the author, seems the most desirable method of treatment, for the reason that the non-metallics are not only the most important, the value of their production having exceeded the metallics by over one hundred and fifty million dollars in 1903, but also because it leads from a discussion of the simpler to the more complex forms of mineral deposits. It has not been thought desirable to include a chapter on geologic and physiographic principles, since the space which could be allotted to it is altogether too small, and, moreover, the study of economic geology presupposes a knowledge of geology and mineralogy on the part of the student. While the references given at the end of each chapter do not include every paper that has been written on the subject to which they refer, still it is believed that they are sufficiently numerous to permit one to follow out the subject in considerable detail if he so desire. In the preparation of the manuscript all available sources of information have been freely drawn upon, and the numbers in parentheses in the text refer to the numbered references at the end of each chapter. Excerpt from Economic Geology: With Special Reference to the United States The continued advance in our knowledge of Economic Geology has necessitated considerable revision for the new edition. In addition, the author has, at the request of a number of teachers, included a description of the more important Canadian mineral deposits, as well as brief references to some of the well-known ones of other countries. While these additions to the text and illustrations have increased the size of the book somewhat, the number of pages is not to be taken as a gauge of the actual increase in size, for the reason that over one hundred full-page illustrations, formerly bound as inserts, are paged in with the text in the present edition. The latest available statistics have been included, and unless otherwise stated are taken from the United States Geological Survey, and Canadian Department of Mines reports. In a few cases, investigations to which reference might have been made in the text have appeared too late to include them, but it has still been possible to insert them in the reference list, and this has been done. Excerpt from Economic Geology United States: With Briefer Mention of Foreign Mineral Products Whenever possible, the localities chosen for description are those with which the author is personally familiar; but, in a field so broad, and covering so many diverse industries, it is scarcely possible for one person to possess information concern ing all, or even a large proportion, of the typical occurrences, or even of all the industries. The work' is, therefore, in many parts a compilation, and free use has been made of all available sources. This has sometimes amounted to an abstract of descrip tions or conclusions, but rarely to actual quotations, since a more condensed statement than is usually found in such sources is needed here. The statistics are almost entirely compiled from the standard sources, and, where more detailed information is desired upon these subjects, reference may be made to these original sources. Excerpt from Geology of Colorado and Western Ore Deposits This treatise contains the substance of a series of elementary lectures delivered by the author to the students of the Colorado State School of Mines. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with an idea of offering technical matter for the discussion of the scientific few. The materials are derived from the writer's own researches, and from the most reliable resources available to him, such as the standard text-books and the valuable published reports of the United States Geological Survey. The writer having for a time been connected with that survey, knows full well how high a value is to be attached to those reports, which must remain for all time as a standard of reference for those interested in the geological relations of the mines of Colorado and Western States. The first part of the work contains a rough sketch of general Geology, for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms used in this science. The sketch is further applied to the local geology of Colorado. The second part refers to the phenomena of veins and ores, and their surroundings, as illustrated by Colorado. Excerpt from Feldspar Deposits of the Bryson City District, North Carolina Muscovite mica in books large enough to yield Sheet mica has been found in a few pegmatites in the area, and small tonnages of mica appear to have been produced from time to time. Mica concentrations in the pegmatites, however, appear tobe small, and most of the books are SO marred by structural defects that they are salable only as scrap mica. Descriptions Of 29 pegmatite mines and prospects are given. The more important mines are discussed in detail, and detailed maps and other diagrams Of the pegmatites exposed in them are presented.
