This publication contains the proceedings of the 5th international conference on chain and network management in agribusiness and the food industry. Papers will focus on the paradoxes caused by conflicting interests in the fields of economics and ethics, technology and environment, legislation and internationalisation, etc. The modern consumer demands highquality products, in broad assortments throughout the year, and for competitive prices. Society imposes constraints on companies in order to economize on the use of resources, ensure animal-friendly and safe production, and restrict pollution. Together with technological developments and increased international competition, these demands have changed the production, trade, and distribution of food products beyond recognition. Demand is no longer confined to local or regional supply. The food industry is now swiftly becoming an interconnected system with a large variety of complex relationships. This is changing the way food is brought to the market. Currently, even fresh produce shipped from halfway around the world can be offered at competitive prices. These developments are accompanied by national and international regulations and legislation in the area of food quality and safety. In response to these changes, business strategies must now focus not only on traditional economical and technological interests, but also on topical issues such as the safety and healthfulness of food products, animal friendliness, the environment, etc. To effectively address paradoxical demands facing businesses, many problems and opportunities must be approached from a multi-disciplinary perspective, and trade-offs must be made between different aspects of production, trade and the distribution of food.

E-commerce offers opportunities for better competition by developing new products and markets, by bringing new actors onto the traditional markets and by developing new types of relationships between the traders. Additionally, using e-commerce, costs can be reduced and the satisfaction of the traders concerning faster delivery can be increased. Nevertheless, electronic transactions are not common in the agri-food sector compared with other businesses. Every B2B relationship and also e-commerce starts with a first transaction. The initial transaction only takes place when the buyer’s perceived trustworthiness of the supplier exceeds the buyer’s perceived risks of the transaction. However, the challenge of the first transaction in e-commerce is how to communicate trust without any previous experience. Trust helps enterprises to trade across border and profit from the online environment, especially in the agri-food sector which deals with complex products due to different uncertainties and risks regarding the food quality and safety. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse which elements of trust are essential in searching for a new international supplier and how these can be applied to e-commerce. To achieve this objective a stepwise approach has been developed by establishing the following phases: 1) identification of the most relevant trade flows; 2) exploration of trade relationships along the most relevant trade flows; 3) assessment of significance of traditional trust elements; 4) applications of traditional trust elements to e-commerce. The applications are determined by examining selected European (Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Spain and Slovenia) and cross-border (USA, Brazil and Turkey) agri-food chains (cereals, meat, fruits and vegetables, and olive oil) to contribute findings of possibly different cultural backgrounds. The identification of the most relevant trade flows (step one) is based on the statistical database and has been used as a basis for future research and to find out where the highest potential for the introduction of e-commerce in the international trade exists. The trade structures differed in the selected countries, and there is a complex picture. The second step has uncovered a predominance of long-term orientation of the international transactions’ exchanges. The findings from the obtained results suggest that the request of the agri-food enterprises for more personal relations explains their need for trusted transactions. The key players in the agri-food sectors have been asked (step three) to determine the priority of trust-building elements which have been developed in the preceding work by using the AHP which appertains to the decision support system. Based on the determination that cultural background can have a significant influence on the formation of trust, the results from the selected countries have been compared. An obvious difference between northern and southern countries has been identified. The northern traders are classified as being focused on provable facts and control with respect to the “product” while the southern ones are more oriented to the relationship with the “seller”. The last step has brought about results on what can be done to increase trustworthiness via B2B applications: like quality management certificates, specifications and warranties or a tracking & tracing system; these seem to be much better suitable than product pictures or market information. Proposals and first indications for trustworthines in B2B e-commerce as described in this thesis can be helpful within the traditional way of food transactions as a facilitator for food traders by accelerating the identification of new suitable suppliers.

This volume represents some of the Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Research Committee on Development Economics (Ausschuss für Entwicklungsländer) of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik) held in Cologne, Germany, in July 2004. The meeting focused on the effectiveness of, and new approaches in, development cooperation. Both issues have become increasingly important in recent years in view of the declining volume of budget funds allocated to development cooperation. The papers discussing the effectiveness of foreign aid shed new light on the issue at a crucial moment where economists have begun to question the recent consensus that the productivity of aid mainly depends on the recipient country's policy environment. The rapid diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) is believed to be one of several important drivers of international trade and globalisation. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyse whether the three ICT - fixed telephone lines, mobile phones, and the internet - has encouraged international trade in important agri-food products. Gravity models of bilateral trade between countries were chosen to explain international trade. We used panel data of the values of bilateral trade between pairs of countries for the period 1995 to 2009. The empirical results from OLS and negative binomial regression estimation suggest that ICT has an effect on international trade in agri-food products. The impact is, however, not always strong and, contrary to expectations, it is often negative. For the products, ‘wine’ and ‘fruit and vegetable juice’, we found no effect of ICT on trade at all. Although there is great variation in the estimated impacts of individual ICT on international trade, the impact of mobile phones is somewhat stronger than that of fixed telephone lines and of the internet. Die rasante Verbreitung von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) gilt als einer von vielen treibenden Kräften des internationalen Handels und der Globalisierung. Ziel dieser Dissertation war es herauszufinden, ob die drei IKT - Festnetztelefone, Mobiltelefone und Internet - den internationalen Handel von wichtigen Agrar- und Ernährungsgütern fördert. Gravitationsmodelle des bilateralen Handels wurden ausgewählt um den internationalen Handel zu erklären. Paneldaten wurden genutzt um den bilateralen Handel zweier Länder zwischen den Jahren 1995 und 2009 zu analysieren. Die empirischen Ergebnisse der OLS Schätzung und der negativ binominalen Regression zeigen, dass IKT einen Effekt auf das Handelsvolumen von Agri-food Produkten ausübt. Der Einfluss ist nicht immer stark und entgegengesetzt der Erwartungen, ist der geschätzte Einfluss häufig negativ. Lediglich bei ‚Wein‘ und bei ‚Obst- und Gemüsesäften‘ konnte kein Einfluss von einem speziellen IKT auf den Handel nachgewiesen werden. Obwohl es große Variationen bei den geschätzten Effekten von einzelnen IKT auf den internationalen Handel gibt, ist der Einfluss von Mobiltelefonen größer als der von Festnetztelefonen und dem Internet.
