Some will tell you that there is no cure for Functional digestive disorders (FDDs), like dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Without being completely cured, with the help of regular internal exercises I developed, I live my life as if I was, because at the earliest sign of pain or symptoms I do the exercises to help eliminate them. I hope my experience will enable as many of you as possible to get some relief from FDDs with or without medication. The Personal Approach section describes in simple terms the symptoms I experienced, as well as some of the hypotheses developed to understand and in order to relieve FDDs. I then explain in detail the exercises for gas evacuation and for the release of nervous tension, and consequently, of pain. As this is a little known approach, as far as I know, I explain in detail the exercises and the various levels of improvement one can expect. The Literature Review section is divided into six parts: the Rome Diagnostic Criteria, the description and treatments recommended for the most common ailments (flatulence, reflux, constipation, diarrhea, migraine, etc.); a few known causes of abdominal pain (food, allergies, diseases, etc.); some recent hypotheses (central nervous system, traumas, psychosomatic causes, depression); exercise suggestions from some authors; and, recommended means of alleviating some of the symptoms (homeopathy, herbal medicine, diet, food supplements). In my experience, whatever the approach used to treat FDDs, the results will be improved if the gas release and relaxation techniques are used in combination with it. I am convinced that FDD-related symptoms can often be treated effectively through continuing efforts, a generous and caring attitude towards oneself, better self-knowledge and good judgment (hence the title Dyspepsia and IBS for the Wise). Mr Samson of Baie-Comeau, Canada, wrote : To date, your technique is the most effective in bringing me some relief. In my view, this book is the most complete to learn how to treat oneself naturally for symptoms related to FDDs. In my case, one hour of internal exercises a day allows my to live a pain free life even with FDDs. My book is meant o show you how. In recent years functional gastrointestinal disorders have attracted much interest. These disorders are extremely common. They are characterized by symptoms and the lack of structural lesions that can be identified with clinically available routine diagnostic tests. Several functional abnormalities are now believed to play a role in the development of the symptoms. This book summarizes the presentations at the International Falk Symposium No. 99 `Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Concepts and Controversies' that took place on May 27-28, 1997. This symposium brought together clinical and basic researchers and clinicians to improve interdisciplinary communication. The meeting comprehensively covered basic and clinical aspects of these disorders, and it not only summarized the current knowledge, but also identified scientific questions that need to be addressed in the future.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a part of the family of gastrointestinal motility disorders and is characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. It is highly prevalent throughout the world with the reported prevalence rates lying between 9% and 25%. The incidence of IBS varies between different ethnic groups and the incidence has also been reported to be different in males and females. The incidence also varies between various clinical subgroups (diarrhea-predominant/constipation-predominant) of the disorder. This is a chronic condition and is the most frequent symptom complex in patients who visit gastroenterologists throughout the world. However, this is one of the least understood GI disorders as it is not a disease but a complex of symptoms. The symptoms are often severe and quite bothersome, and thus have a negative effect on the patient’s quality of life and activity level, often leading to psychiatric complications. Besides this, a substantial economic burden of the disease and its impact in terms of man hours lost per annum make it one of the most troublesome symptom complexes in medicine, which need to be solved. This book has been designed to update the readers on the extensive research done over these years and on the many new potential mechanisms of pathogenesis of this troublesome condition. The reader will also be updated on the changing epidemiology of the condition. Diagnostic approach and management of IBS have also been thoroughly reviewed with an emphasis on the recent updates in the field. Typical supportive case scenarios have been included to exemplify and highlight various points discussed. Thus, it provides an excellent opportunity to widen one’s perspective in this area.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits. This hard-to-handle problem affects nearly all facets of an individual’s life, but because many patients find it difficult to discuss their bowel problems with their doctors, they often suffer in silence. Although there is no cure for the disorder, there are ways to significantly ease and even prevent its symptoms. This book’s effective self-help solutions let patients take control of IBS. First, an introduction to the condition spells out its causes and symptoms and helps readers determine if they actually have IBS. The book then focuses on five key strategies: maintaining proper eating habits, stress management, dietary supplements, alternative therapies such as yoga and acupuncture, and the use of appropriate prescription medications. Accessible and clearly written, the book is punctuated with case histories, up-to-the-minute research, and advice on working with a physician.
