A previous laboratory investigation conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) consisted of casting and testing three large nonreinforced concrete beams (2 by 2 by 8 ft). The description and results of the tests were published in WES Miscellaneous Paper No. 6-613, Report 1, December 1963. In order to (a) corroborate the test data from the previous investigation, (b) determine if flexural strength results of large beams cast from the same mixture can be satisfactorily duplicated, and (c) determine the strains to failure of such large beams so as to obtain knowledge of the resistance of mass concrete to cracking, the U.S. Army Engineer Division Laboratory, North Pacific (NPDL), requested the additional tests reported herein.
