It was attended by delegations from 80 members of FAO and by observers. The Consultation approved drafts of an International Plan of Action for Reducing Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries, an International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks and an International [Guidelines] [Plan of Action] for the Management of Fishing Capacity. The Consultation discussed the need to take urgent action to curb the growing problems of flags of convenience and pirate fishing. Furthermore, it recommended that priority be given by FAO members to consider accepting the Agreement to Promote Compliance with International Conservation and Management Measures by Fishing Vessels on the High Seas.--Publisher's description.

The Consultation reviewed and negotiated the draft FAO International Guidelines during two sessions. It was stressed that a key objective of these guidelines was to guide States and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) in their implementation of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 61/105, towards long-term sustainable use of deep-sea fisheries resources and prevention of significant adverse impacts on vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs). This document contains the report of the Technical Consultation, as well as the FAO International Guidelines as adopted by the meeting."--Résumé de l'éditeur
