'Voyagers' consists almost entirely of anonymous black-and-white snapshots of people in various postures of reading in living rooms, on beds, at the beach, eating breakfast. We can't see what these readers are thinking, but Catanese occasionally breaks the hypnotic typological rhythm to reveal a new photographic element - a pyramid, a starry night, sunlight blindingly glowing through a window - giving us brief glimpses of the readers' potential narrative journeys. A wordless book with the size and feel of a vintage paperback found at a flea market, 'Voyagers' reminds us of the power and intimacy of our relationship to reading devices, and evokes an exotic nostalgia for our recent predigital culture. As with Catanese's prior books (Dive Dark Dream Slow [2012], Hells Hollow, Fallen Monarch [2016]), the images were judiciously selected from the collection of Peter J. Cohen, a celebrated trove of more than 20,000 vernacular photographs from the early to mid-20th century. Gathered from flea markets, dealers, and eBay, these images have been acquired, exhibited, and included in a range of major museum publications.

Me?laina Chole? from Ancient Greek ?????? (melas), and ????? (khole?), it is a photographic research on the study of humoral theory conceived by Hippocrates. Volk, in particular, focuses on black bile, described as a cold and dry fluid, generated by the archetype of the earth. In fact, within the series, we find images of the planet earth seen from space, of human body cells, and of people's faces following the theory of the physiognomy of the time. The ideas of Hippocrates continued to be dominant, being abandoned only almost in the mid-nineteenth century. Extensive traces of this hegemony survive in modern language: the heart was indicated as the seat of feelings and in particular of love which, poetically, is "breath of life"; Melancholia is a feeling of sadness but also a serious form of depression. The same depression that, according to recent studies, will be the most widespread disease in the world in 2030.

A triumphant memoir by the former editor-in-chief of French Elle that reveals an indomitable spirit and celebrates the liberating power of consciousness. In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.
