Excerpt from Diphtheria: Its Causes, Prevention, and Proper Treatment In writing upon the treatment of diphtheria, the author has described the methods which he employs in his own practice, and which he has found successful in a large number of cases, some of which were of the worst form. These methods are not presented as original. They have been selected from those described in the numerous articles on the subject, written by those of the most extensive experience. The author is especially indebted to the very exhaustive treatise on the subject of diphtheria in Ziemssen's Cyclopaedia of Medicine. Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Symptoms and Treatment The Lectures are dogmatical in tone, be cause they were addressed to students; and I believe dogmatism to be essenn'al for success fld student-teaching. I endeavoured to mks them practical in regard of diagnosis and treat ment, because they were delivered to a clinical class. The of the cases are few, partly because the majority of the patients were seen in private, and partly because I have found that students are more confused than instructed. Excerpt from On Diphtheria: Its Nature, Varieties, Pathology, Diagnosis, and Treatment This little work is again presented to the Profession for the simple reason that the first issue is exhausted. It is reprinted exactly as it stood when it was first written, with the exception of a few verbal and typographical corrections, because I have deem ed it only fair to myself to show that the doctrines which are now beginning to be recognised on the subject of Diphtheria were published by me many years ago. Nothing therefore is altered or retracted, but, inasmuch as more information has been gathered, and more confirmation has been afforded of the. Excerpt from Diphtheria: Its Cause, Nature, and Treatment In 1862, while engaged in an extended series of investigations of other pathological and aetiological questions, I fell upon evidences, satisfactory to my own mind, that the cause and nature of diphtheria differed most essentially, in many respects, from the teachings of the profession then, or, indeed, at any time since; and which, if true, demanded a radical Change of treat ment from what prevailed in either school then, or since, to better correspond with what appeared to be the truer nature of the disease. During the three succeeding years, however, or from 1862 to 1865, and until I had secured all the evidence then to be obtained to sustain the new path ological and aetiological views, I did not feel justified in changing the method of treatment I had been taught and previously followed quite successfully in this malady. That method excluded local treatment of any and all kinds, and was in other respects what would generally be considered strictly Homoeopathic; but, aside from avoiding topical applications, it was not the practice taught by Hahnemann, which so many, even of our own school, affect to despise, or. Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Nature and Treatment: Varieties and Local Expressions Nearly twenty years having elapsed since any English Work has appeared on the subject of Diphtheria, and medical views as to the nature and treatment of the disease having undergone considerable development during that period, it has appeared to me that a short sketch of the affection, from one who has had consider able Opportunities of studying it, might be of interest, and possibly of use, to the profession. A malady which, under various names, has existed for so many thousand years, which has been so Widely diffused, and which has caused such dire havoc, must always be of interest to the student of medicine. The victims of the disease have generally been children of tender years, but vigorous youth has frequently fallen under the scourge, and anxious parents have too often suffered for their watchful solicitude. In its attacks it shows no respect for distinctions of sex or social position. Rich and poor, strong and weak, alike fall beneath its onslaught, and its ravages are greater in scattered villages than among the crowded denizens of our great cities. Sanitary science has not yet learnt to bar its pro gress, and, in some instances, arrangements - professedly hygienic - have even appeared to favour its entrance. Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Nature and Treatment: With an Account of the History of Its Prevalence in Various Countries In January of that year, there appeared In Holland another disease which, from its dangerous and inexplicable symptoms, spread fear and horror around. It was a malignant and infectious inflammation of the throat so rapid in its' course that unless assistance was procured within eight hours, the patient was past all hope of recovery before the close of the day. Sudden pains in the throat, and violent oppression of the chest, especially in the region of the heart, threatened suffocation, and at length actually produced it. During the parox ysms the muscles of the throat and chest were seized with violent spasms, and there were but short intervals of alleviation, before a repetition of such seizures terminated in death. Unattended by any premonitory symptoms, the disease began with a severe catarrhal affection of the chest, which speedily advanced to inflammation of the air-passages.
