An authentic, heartfelt and compelling narrative – straight from the horse’s mouth – that reveals for the first time numerous unknown aspects of the life and times of one of the greatest legends of all time who stands out as a symbol of secular India. Dilip Kumar (born as Yousuf Khan), who began as a diffident novice in Hindi cinema in the early 1940s, went on to attain the pinnacle of stardom within a short time. He came up with spellbinding performances in one hit film after another – in his almost six-decade-long career – on the basis of his innovative capability, determination, hard work and never-say-die attitude. In this unique volume, Dilip Kumar traces his journey right from his birth to the present. In the process, he candidly recounts his interactions and relationships with a wide variety of people not only from his family and the film fraternity but also from other walks of life, including politicians. While seeking to set the record straight, as he feels that a lot of what has been written about him so far is ‘full of distortions and misinformation’, he narrates, in graphic detail, how he got married to Saira Banu, which reads like a fairy tale! Dilip Kumar relates, matter-of-factly, the event that changed his life: his meeting with Devika Rani, the boss of Bombay Talkies, when she offered him an acting job. His first film was Jwar Bhata (1944). He details how he had to learn everything from scratch and how he had to develop his own distinct histrionics and style, which would set him apart from his contemporaries. After that, he soon soared to great heights with movies such as Jugnu, Shaheed, Mela, Andaz, Deedar, Daag and Devdas. In these movies he played the tragedian with such intensity that his psyche was adversely affected. He consulted a British psychiatrist, who advised him to switch over to comedy. The result was spectacular performances in laugh riots such as Azaad and Kohinoor, apart from a scintillating portrayal as a gritty tonga driver in Naya Daur. After a five-year break he started his ‘second innings’ with Kranti (1981), after which he appeared in a series of hits such as Vidhaata, Shakti, Mashaal, Karma, Saudagar and Qila.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was excited and nervous about my trip to Afghanistan. I loved my family, but I had to leave them behind to serve our country. I was blessed with the life I had, and I knew I could not ignore this call. #2 I was born in 1973 in Kerala, India. My parents were born in India and committed their lives to Jesus Christ at a young age. They launched an independent church movement that included services held in various people’s homes. #3 I was a social butterfly when I moved to America with my family at age 15. I made many friends, and I enjoyed immersing myself in American culture. I didn’t challenge or prepare myself for college, and when I enrolled at nearby Azusa Pacific University in 1991, I found the courses far tougher. #4 I was extremely attracted to Cilicia, and after we met again in Pasadena, I admitted that I was in love with her. We began a long-distance relationship that lasted for years. I was extremely sad when my parents died in a car accident, and I had to go to the hospital to see them.

I have always felt that Indira Gandhi is the exceptional and foremost example of the dynastic politics of independent India. She is a perfect example of dynastic rule, on one hand, she is called the 'Iron Lady', on the other hand, people pay tribute to her dictatorship for imposing emergency in the country. Where on one hand Indira Gandhi carved her name in golden letters in Indian history by dividing Pakistan into two, on the contrary, she has also endured the slogans like Sanjay ki mummy, badi nikammi for blindly loving her son like Gandhari loved Duryodhana. Nonetheless, we cannot forget that it was Indira Gandhi who gave wings to India's strength and courage by conducting the Nuclear Test; however, she was also the Prime Minister for whom the High Court issued orders to be removed from her office. In fact, Indira Gandhi is merely a symbol of dynasty politics. The point here is to remind the young people that they cannot strive for ideal politics by idolising those who have flourished through family inheritance of post or position. In today's scenario, there are numerous political parties that operate under a single family's control. Although I hold great admiration for Indira Gandhi, however, her darker side is perhaps more prominent. Hence, I believe that young aspirants who are interested in politics can learn valuable lessons from this book on what not to do!

Humanly compelling, beautifully told ... brings to light a forgotten chapter of Indian history, one we need to remember in these troubled times' PRATAP BHANU MEHTA '[Joy Ma and Dilip D'Souza] have seamlessly woven together historical facts with personal stories about how the Chinese- Indians lost the country of their birth' YIN MARSH The untold account of the internment of 3,000 Chinese-Indians after the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Just after the Sino-Indian War of 1962, about 3,000 Chinese-Indians were sent to languish in a disused World War II POW camp in Deoli, Rajasthan, marking the beginning of a painful five-year-long internment without resolution. At a time of war with China, these ‘Chinese-looking’ people had fallen prey to government suspicion and paranoia which soon seeped into the public consciousness. This is a page of Indian history that comes wrapped in prejudice and fear, and is today largely forgotten. But over five decades on, survivors of the internment are finally starting to tell their stories. As several Indian communities are once again faced with discrimination, The Deoliwallahs records these untold stories through extensive interviews with seven survivors of the Deoli internment. Through these accounts, the book recovers a crucial chapter in our history, also documenting for the first time how the Chinese came to be in India, how they made this country their home and became a significant community, until the war of 1962 brought on a terrible incarceration, displacement and tragedy.

Four ground-breaking plays that explore the complex relationship between England and India over more than a century, weaving together personal and political narratives. The Waiting Room: Priya Banerjee is dead, but her life is far from over. She has just three days left to roam the earth before she can go on to the 'Waiting Room' of spirits. As she reluctantly watches and listens to her family, Priya is guided by a droll and increasingly impatient immortal soul in the guise of her Bollywood idol, Dilip Kumar. Great Expectations: Relocating Pip's extraordinary journey to nineteenth-century India, this coming-of-age story, evoking some of Dickens' most colourful characters, is faithful to the period of the book and the richness of Dickens' language – a vivid theatrical retelling of a universally loved masterpiece. The Empress: It is the Jubilee! Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, 1887. At Tilbury Docks, Rani and Abdul step ashore after the long voyage from India. One has to battle a society who deems her a second-class citizen, the other forges an astonishing entanglement with the ageing Queen who finds herself enchanted by stories of an India she rules but has never seen. Lions and Tigers: Based on the true story of Tanika Gupta's great uncle and freedom fighter Dinesh Gupta, the play charts the Dinesh's emotional and political awakening as this extraordinary 19-year-old pits himself against the British Raj. Winner of the James Tait Black Award in 2018.
