The international conference \Operations Research 2008", the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), was held at the University of Augsburg on September 3-5, 2008. About 580 p- ticipants from more than 30 countries presented and listened to nearly 400 talks on a broad range of Operations Research. The general subject \Operations Research and Global Business" str- ses the important role of Operations Research in improving decisions in the increasingly complex business processes in a global environment. The plenary speakers Morris A. Cohen (Wharton School) and Bernd Liepert (Executive Board of KUKA Robotics) addressed this subject. Moreover, one of the founders of Operations Research, Saul Gass (U- versity of Maryland), gave the opening speech on the early history of Operations Research. This volume contains 93 papers presented at the conference, selected by the program committee and the section chairs, forming a representative sample of the various subjects dealt with at Operations Research 2008. The volume follows the structure of the conference, with 12 sections, grouped into six \Fields of Applications" and six \Fields of Methods and Theory". This structure in no way means a separation of theory and application, which would be detrimental in Operations Research, but displays the large spectrum of aspects in the focus of the papers. Of course, most papers present theory, methods and applications together.

Assembly of 'difficult' components onto printed circuit boards is emerging as an important application area for small, fast industrial robots. For other robot tasks - for example paint spraying or arc welding - the applications engineer can rely on a body of published information representing decades of accumulated knowledge about the actual process being automated. But for the process of assembly relatively little systematically presented knowledge exists, mainly because so much manual assembly depends on extremely subtle co-ordination of hand, eye and brain which is hard to represent directly in engineering terms. As for the particular processes of electronic assembly, they have hardly been covered at all in the literature. Yet the design of a good PCB automation system depends crucially on the responsible engineer fully understanding every aspect of the process he or she is automating, whether working for the electronics manufacturer, an automation company, a research laboratory or a machine builder. The improvement process for a printed circuit board assembly line includes hard and soft improvement. The hard improvement includes changing the manually placed component benches and making them more productive. In addition, the soft improvement is established via simulation of the current assembly line and analysis. Continuous improvement of an assembly line should not stop at a specific research point, even if that research contains very detailed sectors of one assembly line or starting from customer order until the product delivery. Therefore, continuous improvement needs to be vigorous for continuous productivity, improvement, and innovation. The aim of my research in this field is to determine the bottlenecks, find a solution, and develop an improvement method via changing the configuration of the setup on the assembly line until a feasible, optimal configuration is achieved. The software used for this kind of simulation is Arena software. Moreover, perform design of experiment (DOE) for an oven study and find out which variables are more significant to achieve good thermal profile improvement. Minitab software is used for DOE. The bottleneck solution will be determined after obtaining the results from simulation. Validation is determined using the Hypothesis test, which is used to compare the analyzed value with other values and choose the best one among them. The data for the research was collected from a working assembly line. The best engineering assumption for the area is used for no permanent data that could be availalbe like design phase prior to the assembly line, or the data ... collected from the manual stations. In the end, the aim of the research is to achieve a better yield via minimizing the time of PCB assembly process. Hence, the outcome for all of these attempts of improving the PCB assembly line for process improvement is to deliver good quality products, reduce cost, minimize the time to delivery, and meet customer expectations. In order to maintain its market share with other competitors, an electronics manufacturing company needs to continue to improve its manufacturing process to achieve high-quality products with less cost.
