American staged art photography is the focus of this unique, in-depth study. Offering a new methodological strategy for viewing photographs, this fascinating account analyzes the work of four of the leading names in this new genre - Les Krims, Duane Michals, Arthur Tress, and Lucas Samaras - and applies new perspectives to 1970s art photography. As it sheds fresh light on the four artists' critiques of purist ideals, it also looks closely at their efforts to transcend the limitations of the purely visual effect of photography. Not only does this book tell the history of American staged photography in broad terms by drawing on theories and methods new to the field, but it also presents the latest approaches to photography history and theory.

Can one woman’s vengeance on her ex lead her to a new love? Or will it tear apart her future forever . . . When MMA trainer Sienna Lane walks in on her boyfriend, Jax “Deadbeat” Deneris in bed with her sister, her world falls apart. In less than five minutes, she’s homeless, friendless, family-less. Vowing to get back at Jax, Sienna quickly charts a course of revenge that will hit him where it hurts most―in the ring. Step one: convince Jax’s rival, Kayden Williams, to train with her. Step two: beat Jax at his own game. At first, Kayden wants nothing to do with Sienna’s schemes, but when he figures out that she might be able to give him an advantage, he caves, letting her first into his home, then into his bed, and finally into his heart. But as much as she cares about Kayden, she can’t let her anger go, and it threatens the shaky foundation they’ve built together from their damaged lives. When he gives Sienna an ultimatum―it’s either him or her revenge, she’s forced to decide between getting back at Jax or throwing her newfound happiness with Kayden away.

Leading art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto here explains how the anti-beauty revolution was hatched, and how the modernist avant-garde dislodged beauty from its throne. Danto argues not only that the modernists were right to deny that beauty is vital to art, but also that beauty is essential to human life and need not always be excluded from art.

How to use design as a tool to create not only things but ideas, to speculate about possible futures. Today designers often focus on making technology easy to use, sexy, and consumable. In Speculative Everything, Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby propose a kind of design that is used as a tool to create not only things but ideas. For them, design is a means of speculating about how things could be—to imagine possible futures. This is not the usual sort of predicting or forecasting, spotting trends and extrapolating; these kinds of predictions have been proven wrong, again and again. Instead, Dunne and Raby pose “what if” questions that are intended to open debate and discussion about the kind of future people want (and do not want). Speculative Everything offers a tour through an emerging cultural landscape of design ideas, ideals, and approaches. Dunne and Raby cite examples from their own design and teaching and from other projects from fine art, design, architecture, cinema, and photography. They also draw on futurology, political theory, the philosophy of technology, and literary fiction. They show us, for example, ideas for a solar kitchen restaurant; a flypaper robotic clock; a menstruation machine; a cloud-seeding truck; a phantom-limb sensation recorder; and devices for food foraging that use the tools of synthetic biology. Dunne and Raby contend that if we speculate more—about everything—reality will become more malleable. The ideas freed by speculative design increase the odds of achieving desirable futures.
