Excerpt from Details of Cyanide Practice The chapters presented in this book are the record of an investigative tour Of the principal cyaniding mills Of North America, taken with the idea Of presenting detailed facts about the present state Of the process to the readers Of the Engineering and Mining Journal, in which periodical they have already appeared. Actual description has been considered Of less importance than discussion and correlation of facts gathered from widely different places, the intention having been to present facts and personal opinions, clearly indicated as such, in a form calculated to inform the profession in general and to promote discussion respecting details involving diverging practice. Some pages Of the discussion elicited have been included as illuminating the subjects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from d104 Book of Cyanide Practice The cyanide process is a subject comprehending many divisions, and one that can best be treated along some phase or with a special point in view. The point in view or purpose of this work is to furnish students, cyanide workers, and those generally and technically interested in the subject, with a practical and technical exposition of the principles and basic practice applicable to cyanidation in general, and not of the particular practice at any plant or locality. An exposition not too technical and complicated or comprehensive for those who are acquiring or about to acquire their technical equipment, nor too superficial for the experienced operator. Intended primarily to guide the first footsteps and early progress of those who hope to eventually operate plants, the author has used simple explanations and many repetitions and references to other parts of the text in the effort to clarify a subject that is confusing, to say the least, to the beginner. Desiring to produce a work that will be of use in actual practice, rather than something to simply add to one's technical library, the author has not kept within academic limitations, but has resorted to homely methods of explanation where deemed advisable. Though going into considerable detail, no branch of the subject has been carried to that point where it should be taken up as a special subject. It aims to lift the careful reader and student to that point where he may intelligently seek further information in the literature on investigations into special and abstruse details of the subject, for which purpose and as an aid to the advanced worker an extended Classified Bibliography of the more accessible literature on the cyanide process is included. Where it has been impossible to give definite figures without going into explanatory details, obviously beyond the scope of this work, figures representing the average or rational extremes in practice have been given. The reader may consider these as carefully selected to represent accurately approved modern practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Cyanide Practice: 1910 to 1913 This is the third in the series of books that began with Recent Cyanide Practice' edited by Mr. T. A. Rickard, and printed in 1907, and which was continued by More Recent Cyanide Practice edited by Mr. H. Foster Bain and printed in 1910. The plan of all three books is the same. They include articles on all phases of current cyanide practice based upon experience in all parts of the world. In the main the papers here reprinted were first published in the Mining and Scientific Press, One or two related intimately to discussions in the columns of the Press, have been taken from The Mining Magazine, and the South African Mining Journal to which acknowledgment is gladly made here and in the body of the text. In preparing the various papers for use in this book a number have been materially condensed and my own have been revised. Instead of the articles being arranged according to dates, they are given under their proper heads, from the chemistry of the process to the clean-up, although the dates on which they were published are also given. This arrangement should find favor with readers, who will be able more readily to find any particular department or process. The time covered by the articles here brought together extended from July, 1910, to January, 1913, except that a few appearing in the Press in the early part of the present year have been included. The necessity of restricting the size of the volume has made it necessary to omit a number of excellent papers of local or temporary importance, and also many that deal especially with ore dressing and stamp milling rather than cyanidation proper. A number dealing especially with cyanidation in Mexico having already been printed in Mr. Ferdinand McCanns work Cyanide Practice in Mexico have also been left out. Even with these omissions, this book will, I hope, serve as have its predecessors, the main purpose of furnishing in convenient form a general view of the best in current cyanide practice. Excerpt from Recent Cyanide Practice From the early beginnings of civilization gold has been highly prized and eagerly sought after. Human life has been freely sacrificed in its acquirement from natural sources, as well as in its forcible seizure from those who already possessed it. The 'age of Gold' was not necessarily the 'golden Age, ' for the noble metal, in its unique and barbaric splendor, has symbol ized much that has been unworthy in national and individual aims and ideals. With the advent of the industrial age gold was destined to take a new place in the world's history as the great medium of exchange, the great promotor of industry and com merce. While individual gain still remained the propelling power toward its discovery and acquisition, every fresh discovery led directly or indirectly to the freer interchange of the products of industry, and thus reacted favorably on the industrial and social conditions of thetime. So long as the chief Supplies of gold were Obtained from alluvial deposits by the simple process of washing, the winning of gold almost necessarily continued to be pursued by individuals, or by small groups of workers, who were mainly attracted by the highly speculative nature of the occupa tion. These workers endured the greatest hardships and ran the most serious personal risks, drawn on from day to day by the hope that some special stroke of good fortune would be theirs. This condition prevailed also in fields in which the reef gold occurred near the surface, where it was easily accessible without costly mining appliances, and where the precious metal was loosely associated with a weathered matrix. These free-milling ores could be readily handled by crushing and amalgamation with mercury, so that here also no elaborate organization and no great expenditure of Capital were necessary. A third stage was reached when the more easily-worked deposits above the water-line had been worked out. Not only were more costly appliances and more elaborately organized efforts required to bring the ore to the surface, but the ore, when obtained, contained. Excerpt from Cyanide Practice in Mexico The general appreciation oi the Spanish volume, and the fact that the Mexican practice deals principally with the cyanidation of silver ores, has caused the author to believe that the present volume, describing in detail the practice in Mexican mills, will be an accept a'b'le addition to the literature on the subject. Excerpt from More Recent Cyanide Practice The success which attended the publication of 'Recent Cyanide Practice, ' edited by Mr. T. A. Rickard, and printed in 1907, together with repeated calls for a volume covering in the same manner still later developments in cyanidation, has led to the compilation of this book. In it the development of cyanidation from October 1907 to July 1910 is reflected in articles contributed originally to the Mining and Scientific Press. The individual articles cover a wide range and illustrate the development both of theory and practice in the period covered. They have come from all parts of the world and the contributors include the leaders in the application of cyanide to metallurgy. No attempt has been made to harmonize conflicting views, and as little change as possible has been made in the original wording of the authors. The necessary limit to the size of the volume has precluded reprinting of many other worthy and interesting papers, for which readers must refer to the files of the Mining and Scientific Press. In making the selection of material I have had the valued assistance of Mr. Bertram Hunt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
