Excerpt from Denmark and Its Relations It is not to the purpose to allege that Holstein always was and still remained a part of the German Empire, for the Ger man Empire was dissolved nine years before. There was no Germany in 1815, and if there had been, all territorial rights were in a sort of abeyance by common consent, subject to the new adjustment at Vienna. The Germanic Confederation. Excerpt from Denmark and Its Relations It is a debated question among scholars whether our Anglo-Saxon race and language are by their origin more Norse than Saxon, or more Saxon than Norse, or about half of one and half of the other. At any rate, both the streams came from what is now the kingdom of Denmark - the territory lying between Cape Skagen (or The Skaw) on the north and the river Elbe on the south. And it is evident that there must have been in those two races a greater affinity for each other than for other tribes, because they have become so thoroughly assimilated together in England that it is impossible to draw accurate lines of separation, among words or people. And we should infer that it must be some artificial cause, and not a natural repulsion, that could create an incompatibility between the original stocks of our race at this age of the world. This kingdom of Denmark is the home of our ancestors, of both roots; and as such is entitled to our affectionate regards. If England is our mother, Denmark is our grandmother. It is time we were better acquainted with a people so near of kin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Denmark and Sweden: With Iceland and Finland Among all the countries ofeurope, it is with those of the Scandinavian North and with Holland that we in Britain are most nearly connected by blood, by reli gion, and by similarity of ideas and habits. Yet most of us in this country have very scant knowledge of the history of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, although the political relations of both Great Britain and Ireland were constantly affected by all-these four countries during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries, and though in quite recent times our commercial and also our intellectual intercourse with them has attained a constantly increasing im portance. Accordingly, the appearance of a new Sketch of their history, brief, but perhaps all the more likely to be generally read because it is brief, deserves a welcome. The motive which specially prompts me to write these few lines of preface to the book of Mr. Jon Stefansson, is the fact that he is an Icelander, and that I have long known him as a scholar who has brought his knowledge of the lan guage and history of his own isle to illustrate the early history of the British islands by a study of our place-names, which he has shown to be, especially. Excerpt from Danish-American Diplomacy: 1776 1920 This work was originally intended to cover the diplomatic relations between the United States and Denmark from the Revolutionary War to the end of the nineteenth century. Because of the recent purchase of the Danish West Indies, a short chapter has been added in which a brief survey has been made of the leading events that have taken place during the last twenty years. An attempt has been made to arrange the chapters of this volume in chronological order, but it has been found necessary at times to allow them to overlap. In preparing this volume the author wished to use the files of the Department of State at Washington, D. C., but was unable to gain access to them. Having asked for permission the following reply was received: The Depart ments regrets to say that it has discouraged application to do research work of this character as it has not the facilities or space to properly supervise and examine the work, and that therefore it is reluctantly compelled to decline your request at this time. It has thus been necessary to rely on the material found in the various libraries and archives mentioned below. In the city of Des Moines, Iowa, the author has worked in the Des Moines University Library, the Iowa State Law Library, and the Library of the Historical Department of Iowa. Most of the material in foreign languages has been obtained in the Library of Congress at Washington, D. C. The libraries of the University of Iowa and of the State Historical Society of Iowa, both located at Iowa City, have been of much value in verifying references. Excerpt from In English and American Literature a Bibliography Edited for the Danish American Association A survey of these titles will show that a large number of general and special subjects within the range of Danish history, culture, social conditions, literature, etc., has been fully and exhaustively treated in English, while many topics, equally important, yet arc waiting for an adequate elucidation. These titles demonstrate that some of the greatest treasures of our literature have been translated into English, - and that, on the other hand, some of the typical and most renowned books in Danish still await translation, or even a critical comment. Saxo is found in translation, with a good critical apparatus in English. Of the works of Holberg, Ewald, Ingemann, Martensen, etc., etc., certain works are available in translation. Two of our most remarkable and typical authors, however, viz., Grundtvig and Kierkegaard, are comparatively unknown in English literature. Blicher never found a translator. The list shows that the English language group reflects fairly well our history and our public affairs up to and including the period of 1864, and that the recent developments in Denmark have been treated quite sporadically and largely in journalistic form. Danish economics, agriculture, school methods, commerce, etc., have received some attention in late years, commensurate with the increasing communication between Denmark and its Western connections. The literary material surrounding Hans Christian Andersen and Bertel Thorvaldsen, the two most international of Danish names in the past, is very extensive. Arts, crafts, architecture, and industrial products seem less known, through literature, than esthetics and tourist topics. Ever since the war of 1657 - 1658, Danish politics have precipitated literary documents in English: the great events of 1801, 1807, the Struensee period, the periods of 1848 and 1864; all have left their evidence in English literature. This bibliography will indicate that most of the literature involved in our inquiry has been produced from a personal initiative. Without doubt, the activity in translating Danish literature into English, will attain to a state of organized effort.
