Cruciform brooches were large and decorative items of jewellery, frequently used to pin together women's garments in pre-Christian northwest Europe. Characterised by the strange bestial visages that project from the feet of these dress and cloak fasteners, cruciform brooches were especially common in eastern England during the 5th and 6th centuries AD. This book provides a multifaceted, holistic and contextual analysis of more than 2,000 Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooches. It offers a critical examination of identity in Early Medieval society, suggesting that the idea of being Anglian in post-Roman Britain was not a primordial, tribal identity transplanted from northern Germany, but was at least partly forged through the repeated, prevalent use of dress and material culture.

The coefficients of damping in roll and rolling effectiveness (with differential incidence of the horizontal surfaces) are determined for a slender, equal-span, cruciform wing. It is found that the coefficient of damping in ar roll is 62 percent greater than for a plane slender wing of equal aspect ratio, and that the rolling effectiveness is 53 percent less than for a plane slender wing of equal aspect ratio. The analysis can be used in the estimation of the characteristics of a slender, equal-span, cruciform wing having any specified distribution of normal velocity components on the horizontal and vertical surfaces.

The damping in roll of cruciform delta wings in supersonic flow has been evaluated by means of small-disturbance (linearized) wing theory; both subsonic and supersonic component stream velocities normal to the leading edges have been considered. In addition, some known two-dimensional results for rotating multibladed laminae have been applied to obtain the loading when the number of panels is changed from four to an arbitrary number, under the restriction of low aspect ratio; the damping in roll has been determined explicitly for three panels. Finally, the damping for an inifinite number of panels has been evaluated without restriction as to aspect ratio or Mach number.

The aerodynamic forces and moments exerted on pitched and yawed wing-body combinations consisting of a slender body of revolution and a cruciform arrangement of thin wings have been investigated by two theoretical methods. One method, an extension of the slender wing-body theory of NACA TN No. 1662, makes possible the determination of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, the forces, and the moments for slender cruciform-wing and body combinations in which the wings may be dissimilar plan form. For elegance and beauty, the Constantinopolitan scribes set standards rarely surpassed. The Gospel lectionary was among the books that attracted the most enthusiastic attention of scribes, illuminators, and their patrons. As an important liturgical item, the lectionary was often exquisitely decorated. The subject of this study, the lectionary in the Pierpont Morgan Library, is unusual even among such luxury manuscripts because its scribe laboriously copied every page of text in the shape of a cross. It is one of just three such manuscripts made in Constantinople around the middle of twelfth century, and it is the only one that contains narrative illustration. Jeffrey Anderson provides a full description of the manuscript, and he has translated and indexed its calendar of saints. Each of the miniatures is reproduced, described, and discussed, and Anderson relates some scenes to versions found in other Byzantine lectionaries and Gospels. The illustrations are attributed to two illuminators, and in a separate chapter Anderson situates their contributions with regard to the ruling, writing, and illumination of the pages. He also relates, through style, the cruciform lectionaries to dated twelfth-century monuments to establish their place in the history of Byzantine art.
