This book provides a comprehensive overview of acute and chronic critical limb ischemia (CLI). Loss of an extremity, or a portion thereof, is not necessarily a life-ending process, but it is a debilitating experience whether involvement is of the upper or lower extremity. It reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, etiology, physical examination, imaging modalities, diagnosis, and treatment of limb ischemia. It investigates the most frequent as well as the more unusual etiological processes that may lead to the most dreaded concern of patients and families: amputation. The therapeutics of CLI has been significantly advanced through the multidisciplinary approach to the patient and disease, a focus that is explored in detail throughout the book. Surgical and endovascular treatment guidelines as well as medical therapy, wound healing, and long-term care are discussed. Featuring an extensive illustration program, Critical Limb Ischemia: Acute and Chronic, is a valuable resource for vascular and endovascular surgeons, vascular medicine specialists, interventional radiologists, and cardiologists.

Chronic critical limb ischemia remains one of the most frequent causes of illness and hospitalization in the western world. Interest in critical limb ischemia has increased markedly in recent years. There have been significant achievements in diagnostic pro cedures as well as in the medical, invasive, and surgical treatment of patients with critical limb ischemia. Despite a considerable research effort, the pathophysiological mechanisms of critical limb ischemia in humans remains to be established. Prominent is the increasing interest in the microcirculation, as well as in the hemorheological, hemostatic and inflammatory changes which may promote critical limb ischemia. Further research is necessary to quantify the relevance of microcirculatory in vestigations in terms of predicting the prognosis or to evaluate the effects of new therapies. Our main task is to offer the patient the best possible therapy in order to avoid limb loss and to improve quality of life. The various methods of treatment, their suc cess rates, and their complications, must be carefully evaluated and discussed. This volume presents the complex field of diagnosis and treatment of critical limb ischemia. The diagnosis and treatment involves different specialists including angio logists, interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, diabeto logists, etc. Individual chapters have been written by Belgian and German experts in the various specialities, who present their own experience. We are very grateful that these experts have joined us to produce this book on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and rational therapy.

Structural and functional abnormalities of arteries and veinsmanifest clinically in a broad spectrum of disorders, includinganeurysmal disease, atherosclerosis, vasculitis, venousinsufficiency, microvascular complications, thrombo-embolism andlower limb ulceration. Many of these are common and/orchronic conditions which present for initial assessment by primaryhealth care workers. This new edition is a practical guide to the most commonlypresenting disorders, and provides a structured approach toclinical assessment, investigations and management. The lastfew years have seen major changes in the use of non-invasive orminimally-invasive techniques, e.g wider use of CT and MRangiography, and increasing use of percutaneous interventions forcarotid, lower limb and reno-vascular disease. The ABC of Arterial and Venous Disease (Second Edition)explains the underlying technology and the applications of newminimally-invasive methods, especially CT and MRI, and provides anup-dated, evidence-based guide to the modern day management ofpatients with common, life-threatening diseases involving differentparts of the circulation. This authoritative, full-colour, illustrated ABC is anideal reference for the primary care, non-specialist practitionerto base effective management and prevention programmes.

Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.
