"The good news is children—including those under the age of 12 years who cannot be vaccinated as of the time I am writing this—have experienced significantly lower rates of COVID-19 than adults. The very significant decline during this same timeframe in rates of other readily transmitted diseases, such as influenza, hasbeenwelldescribedbymany. However, muchofthatdeclinewasdoubtlessattributable to the “lock-downs” that many families—parents from work and children from school—endured. I am writing this editorial in September 2021, just as we seem to bebeginningtoseethedeclineofyetanothersurgeinCOVID-19infectionsthroughout the United States, approximately 90%ofwhichhasbeenattributedtotheDeltavariant ofCOVID-19.ThismutantissusceptibletothethreeapprovedvaccinesagainstCOVID19in the United States. But the Delta variant persevered and found the alarmingly high numbersofadultswhohadelectednottobevaccinatedandthechildrenwhoweretoo young to be included in the vaccine-approved populations. In summary, this issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America serves us well as the diseases it focuses on are still with us, in all likelihood will remain with us for some time, and will continue to increase in prevalence as our country’s population returns to, and our country’s governance opens its doors to, international tourism." -- Foreword.
