It consists of Lectures delivered at Paris in the years 1828-9. "The delivery of these Lectures," says Sir Wm. Hamilton, speaking of the first volume, "excited an unexampled sensation in Paris. Condemned to silence during the reign of Jesuit ascendancy, M. Cousin, after eight years of honorable retirement, had ascended again the chair of philosophy; and the splendor with which he recommenced his academical career, more than justified the expectation which his recent reputation as a writer, and the memory of his earlier lectures, had inspired. Two thousand auditors listened, in admiration, to the eloquent exposition of doctrines unintelligible to the many, and the oral discussion of philosophy awakened in Paris, and in France, an interest unexampled since the days of Abelard. The daily journals found it necessary to gratify, by their earlier analyses, the impatient curiosity of the public; and the Lectures themselves, taken in short hand, and corrected by the Professor, propagated weekly the influence of his instruction to the remotest provinces of the kingdom." Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: From the Renaissance to the Present Undertaking only to a limited extent the higher logicogenetic development and the complete and final valuation of ideas and systems of thought, the present work aims primarily merely to present with considerable fulness, and as simply and clearly as may be consistent with scientific accuracy, the principal content of the leading systems (and partial systems) of philosophy in modern times, together with a reasonable amount of information regarding philosophical authors and works. It aims to be something more than a mere "chronological" account of systems, authors, and works; to show, in a general way, at least, the actual historical connections of systems, - i.e., to exhibit the historical continuity of modern philosophical thought, and, further, to furnish materials and stimulus to the student for the study of the higher genesis and final values of ideas and systems. The paragraphs of characterization (marked Result) are of course intended rather as helpful suggestions than as complete, absolute statements of final truth. It seems not out of place to remind the reader that where, as almost necessarily in a case like the present, a work contains numerous quotations, direct and indirect, and adaptations from a great variety of authors, a certain heterogeneity and lack of smoothness in style is inevitable. The apparently disproportionate length at which certain recent systems are treated will find sufficient excuse, it is assumed, in the fact that they have not as yet become commonly known through other histories of philosophy. Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: A Sketch of the History of Philosophy From the Close of the Renaissance to Our Own Day The appearance of a new representation of an important period in the History of Philosophy will naturally give rise to the ques tion as to what view of philosophy is regarded by the author as fundamental, and what is the significance, and what the value which he ascribes to its history. To which I answer that the whole aim of the studies of which the publication of this book denotes the provisional conclusion has been to shed light on the question as to what philosophy really is. As we learn to know a man from his biography, so also we must be able to learn to know a science from its history. And it is the more natural that we should adopt this path, since experience is continually showing us that, within the sphere of philosophy, contending views are advanced, each one of which claims to be valid, so that there is. No one exposition of philosophy to which we can point as developing an exhaustive conception of it. It is natural, therefore, that we should here, as within the sphere of religion, employ the comparative method. The history of philosophy treats of the attempts which have been made by individual thinkers to discuss the ultimate problems of know ledge and of life. It will be a result of no small importance, therefore, if we can show clearly what are the problems with which philosophy deals, how these problems have presented themselves at different times, and what, in each case, were the conditions which determined the different statements of the problems, and the attempts at their solution. If such a result can be approximately attained, the study of the history of philosophy will be of no small importance for the future development of philosophy itself.
