Excerpt from County Families of Lancashire and Cheshire The Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester have been aptly described as the "seed-plots of gentility," possessing, as they do, in proportion to their respective areas, a larger number of old County Families than are to be found in any other of the English shires; families whose representatives have in successive ages borne their part in the stirring scenes that go to make up our "rough island story," and the names of whom are inseparably linked with the most important events in the nation's history - men who have won pre-eminence by power of brain and prowess of arm, by ability to govern in time of peace and the capacity to command in time of war, and who have fought the battle of English liberty, and helped to lay the foundations of that larger freedom we now enjoy. Of the bygone generations that have acted their busy parts in "Bright embattled fields Of trophied helmets, spears, and shields," the precise genealogist and prosaic antiquary have told us little beyond the brief story of baptism, marriage, and burial; details that, however valuable in themselves, are necessarily dry by reason of the rigid manner in which they are narrated. Excerpt from The Cheshire and Lancashire Historical Collector, Vol. 1 I have often wished that we had some periodical which might become a receptacle for those scraps of information relating to local history which at present are bandied about as mere waifs and strays, and may, unless secured, be ere long lost to us for ever. The Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Historic Society, though in themselves most valuable, are more adapted for elaborate essays and papers than such matter as I have in view - added to which, the fact of their only appearing as an annual publication, precludes their forming a direct medium of intercommunication between those interested in the subjects to which they refer. Excerpt from Old Halls in Lancashire and Cheshire: Including Notes on the Ancient Domestic Architecture of the Counties Palatine With Numerous Illustrations As minute architectural descriptions are not easily followed by the general public, and are apt to be found tedious even by professional readers, I have endeavoured so far as possible to Supply their place by accurate drawings. In the illustrations accompanying topographical books it has been too common to take great liberties with facts in order to attain picturesqueness of effect. In the sketches and ground plans contained in the present work the information of the reader has been the object strictly kept in view, and the utmost pains have been taken to ensure absolute accuracy. -in the case of the quadrangular houses bird's-eye views have been given, as no other method of representation would convey any just idea of their size and importance. Owing to pressure of business, I have been obliged to forego the pleasure of making these drawings with my own hand. The illustrations have, therefore, been prepared by others, in part from my own sketches, and in part from carefully measured drawings made specially for this work under my direction. I have to express my thanks to my friends Messrs. W. W. Baldwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
