Burdens imposed upon J j imports from foreign countries would necessarily navel1 reflected effects in a diminution of our exports. Our foreign trade in cottons would not escape bearing some share of the diminution. In what degree our various lines of export would be affected it is impossible to say a priori, but certainly they would not all be equally affected. The reduction of our exports would take place along lines of least resistance, which it would not be difficult to define, and it is quite conceivable that the cotton trade would not be one of the trades to suffer only slightly.
