WAS THE UNIVERSE MADE FOR MAN?Is our universe the only one of its kind or are there others? Is it just a coincidence that life evolved on Earth or are the remarkable and unusual set of circumstances that brought about the emergence of humankind part of some deeper mystery that reveals an as yet unknown cosmic purpose?A PROVOCATIVE SEARCH THROUGH SPACE AND TIME FOR A COSMIC BLUEPRINT-AND THE SOURCE OF LIFE IN THE UNIVERSEIn this intriguing exploration of our relationship with the universe, eminent physicist Martin Rees and acclaimed science writer John Gribbin search for the grand design of the universe-and the meaning of the so-called coincidences that allow life to exist on our planet. Rees and Gribbin present the advances in understanding the nature of dark matter (which controls the dynamics, structure, and eventual fate of the universe), explore mini and massive black holes, brown dwarfs, and novel forms of matter such as quark nuggets. Along the way they fascinate us with what scientists have already discovered about cosmic strings, superstrings, and the elusive TOE (theory of everything). They also speculate on the possibility of the existence of other universes and of other intelligent life in our own. An expert, exhilarating tour of cosmic evolution and human destiny. Cosmic Coincidences' investigation sheds new light on the monumental questions of why our universe is the way it is and why we are here.JOHN GRIBBIN, science writer and cosmologist, is the author of many books, including In Search of Schrödinger's Cat, In Search of the Big Bang, In Search of the Double Helix, and The Omega Point.MARTIN REES is a professor of astronomy and a colleague of Stephen Hawking's at Cambridge University. He is one of the world's leading theorists in the field of astrophysics."A brilliant and highly readable tour through the Universe.... This is an authoritative and challenging book. It will spark hot debate among scientists and grasp the reader from start to finish"-F. David Peat, Ph.D., author of Synchronicity"A lucid and exciting guide... An evenhanded appraisal of the controversial 'anthropic principle.'"- Nick Herbert, author of Quantum Reality

Although much has been said and written about coincidences, there is a marked absence when it comes to the development of a comprehensive model that incorporates the many different ways in which they can be understood and explained. One reason for this omission is undoubtedly the sharp divide that exists between those who find coincidences meaningful and those who do not, with the result that the conclusions of the many books and articles on the subject have tended to fall into distinct camps. The Many Faces of Coincidence attempts to remedy this impasse by proposing an inclusive categorisation for coincidences of all shapes and sizes. At the same time, some of the implications arising from the various explanations are explored, including the possibility of an underlying unity of mind and matter constituting the ground of being.

A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice One of LitHub's Most Anticipated Books of 2020 An expansive, radiant, and genre-defying investigation into bonding—and how we are shaped by forces we cannot fully know Is love a force akin to gravity? A kind of invisible fabric which enables communications through space and time? Artist Harry Dodge finds himself contemplating such questions as his father declines from dementia and he rekindles a bewildering but powerful relationship with his birth mother. A meteorite Dodge orders on eBay becomes a mysterious catalyst for a reckoning with the vital forces of matter, the nature of consciousness, and the bafflements of belonging. Structured around a series of formative, formidable coincidences in Dodge’s life, My Meteorite journeys with stylistic bravura from Barthes to Blade Runner, from punk to Pale Fire. It is a wild, incandescent book that creates a literary universe of its own. Blending the personal and the philosophical, the raw and the surreal, the transgressive and the heartbreaking, Harry Dodge revitalizes our world, illuminating the magic just under the surface of daily life.

Pages 266. Quantum physics proposes, on a scientific basis, the concept of a universe in which each particle is connected with all the others through a bond that surpasses every law of classical physics. In this context, all things converge in a great project of cosmic evolution, the "Unus mundus". Today many well-known scientists subscribe to the "anthropic theory", according to which the universe was not born by chance, but was created exactly with the characteristics it possesses to host intelligent life. The latest scientific discoveries deny materialism and impose a more spiritual vision of the universe in which we live. The synchronicity theory was developed with rigorous methodologies by the famous psychologist Carl Jung. During a long collaboration Jung obtained the support and encouragement of a valuable fellow student, the physicist Wolfgang Pauli who was a Nobel Prize in 1945. Synchronicity represents a very valid starting point for investigating the profound reasons for some events that normally appear random. In fact, synchronicities are manifested in the life of each of us through strange coincidences, dreams, intuitions and presentiments, to confirm that nothing comes from chance. The synchronicities described by Jung are chains of apparently random episodes, which nevertheless contain a "numinous" message. Although the theory of synchronicity is credited to the field of metaphysics, the most current discoveries of quantum physics have demonstrated its scientific plausibility. Each event, like the series of epidemics that dot the last few decades, leaves the context of randomness and takes on a well-defined meaning in the history of the human species. Probably the theory of synchronicity is the most suitable to answer this question: does the coronavirus represent an event due to chance, or does it contain a significance that needs to be revealed? In the final part this book deals with the numerous cases of epidemics that have developed in recent years (Sars, Mers, Hiv, Ebola, Covid-19 etc.) and places them in the context of a global synchronicity that is guiding humanity towards highest level of complexity and awareness.
