The greater the percentage of cultivated land the less protective cover available for hibernation and, consequently, a reduced population in comparison to crops that may be attacked. Information obtained from these surveys provides a basis for preliminary estimate of control needs as well as a record of hibernating populations; however, weather conditions the following spring determine the severity of infestations.
