During the years 1815 to 1830, the western movement, swelled by many favoring influences, reached unprecedented volume. By 1815 the older transalleghany settlements were already well out of the pioneer stage, and the frontier line was advancing in form of a wedge the point of which was rapidly ascending the Missouri, while the irregular sides slanted back to the northeast and southeast, crossing Illinois and Indiana well south of the center, and following roughly the Tennessee boundary and the Oconee River on the South. The banks of the Mississippi bore scattered settlements, and the State of Louisiana formed a kind of island of population lying in advance of the main frontier. Within a few years after the signing of the Peace of Ghent, the acquisition of Florida and a series of treaties with the Indian tribes, now lacking the support of foreign influences, opened to white occupation vast tracts in the Northwest and Southwest. The land laws of 1820 and 1821 made easier than ever before the acquisition of land by the poor pioneer, while the vast extent of the frontier favored the squatter by diminishing the prob "Cf. nationalism of the speech of Martindale of New York on this bill Annals. The diversion of New England agriculture from grain raising to wool-growing and dairying, under stress of competition with the fresh lands of the West, displaced a portion of the population which, not taking kindly to labor in the rising factories, joined the westward-moving stream. History and Economic Life offers students a wide-ranging introduction to both quantitative and qualitative approaches to interpreting economic history sources from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century. Having identified an ever-widening gap between the use of qualitative sources by cultural historians and quantitative sources by economic historians, the book aims to bridge the divide by making economic history sources more accessible to students and the wider public, and highlighting the need for a complementary rather than exclusive approach. Divided into two parts, the book begins by equipping students with a toolbox to approach economic history sources, considering the range of sources that might be of use and introducing different ways of approaching them. The second part consists of case studies that examine how economic historians use such sources, helping readers to gain a sense of context and understanding of how these sources can be used. The book thereby sheds light on important debates both within and beyond the field, and highlights the benefits gained when combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to source analysis. Introducing sources often avoided in culturally-minded history or statistically-minded economic history courses respectively, and advocating a combined quantitative and qualitative approach, it is an essential resource for students undertaking source analysis within the field.

In recent years the history of political science has become recognised as an important but neglected area of study. The Development of Political Science is the first comprehensive discussion of the subject in a comparative international perspective. Offering a wide-ranging account of the development of the subject and its dissemination across national borders and cultural divides, the book begins with a study of the historiography of the discipline in the United States, a country which has been at the forefront of the field. Widening its discussion to emphasise Western Europe as a focus for comparison, the contributors provide studies of further areas of interest such as China and Africa. This particular approach emphasises the book's vision of political science as a growing transnational body of knowledge. In presenting critical analysis of the state of the field, this vigorous study aims to further the development of the discipline in the countries discussed, and to provide a work that is interesting not only to political scientists, but to all those concerned with the development of the social sciences.
