Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: M. Tech, , course: ELectronics and Telecommunication, language: English, abstract: In recent years, there has been constant growth in using gigahertz frequencies for various applications. The state of the art of antenna integration with passive circuits techniques offering increased cut-off frequencies, open up new opportunities for integrating systems along with an antenna for either Transmit/Receive application. The work carried out in this seminar mainly deals with the survey of antenna structures which are compatible to integrate with passive circuits for microwave as well as millimeter/sub-millimeter wave applications. Lot of research in the field of passive receiver front end design is being carried out. This work covers three aspects of passive receiver front end design. The first is the analysis and design of new wide band high gain micro strip antennas, the second aspect is the design of compact high performance low-pass and band-pass filters and the third aspects is to integrate antenna and filter into single substrate. The trend of communication systems has imposed many restrictions on designers to have systems which should be light weight, robustness and have easy integration to other microwave circuits. In most of the communications systems the receiving antenna is followed with a band-pass filter. In microwave band this is normally a distributed lter and is implemented using the transmission line resonators. The transmission line filters are not compact, and in many applications where size is an issue may not provide the best solution. In the new active arrays, for example, it is desirable to integrate a complete front end with each individual antenna element. The area allocated to each cell, however, is determined by the array design and apertures efficiency requirements and is barely integrate the antenna and band pass filter in a single module, as is it more compact may also decrease the prefiltering losses to improve the noise performance. The design of such system is a challenging task.

In recent years, the miniaturization of cell phones and computers has led to a requirement for antennas to be small and lightweight. Antennas, desired to operate in the WLAN frequency range, often possess physical sizes that are too large for integration with radio-frequency (RF) devices. When integrating antennas into three-dimensional (3D) system-on-package (SOP) transceivers, the maintenance of a compact size also provides isolation from other devices, hence, surface wave propagation or high dielectric constant materials such as low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) does not affect nearby components of the transceiver such as filters, baluns, and other embedded passives. Therefore, the application of design methods is necessary for realizing compact antennas in the wireless community that can be integrated to RF packages. Furthermore, it is essential that these compact antennas maintain acceptable performance characteristics, such as impedance bandwidth, low cross-polarization, and high efficiency. In addition, the analysis of circuit modeling techniques that could be used to obtain a better understanding of the physical phenomena of the antenna is quite necessary as modules become more and more complex. Based on these requirements, the focus of this research is to improve the design of compact antennas for wireless communications, wireless local area networks (WLAN), and millimeter-wave applications by using time-domain electromagnetic and circuit modeling techniques and optimizations. These compact antenna designs are applied to practical wireless communications systems such as global system of mobile communications (GSM), Bluetooth Industrial-Scientific-Medical (ISM) devices, IEEE802.11a WLAN, and Local Multipoint Distribution Systems (LMDS) applications. Parametric analyses are conducted to study critical parameters that may affect the antenna designs. Moreover, optimizations are performed to optimize the structures, and measured results are presented to validate design techniques.

Offers an up-to-date description of modern multifunctional antenna systems and microwave components Compact multifunctional antennas are of great interest in the field of antennas and wireless communication systems, but there are few, if any, books available that fully explore the multifunctional concept. Divided into six chapters, Compact Multifunctional Antennas for Wireless Systems encompasses both the active and passive multifunctional antennas and components for microwave systems. It provides a systematic, valuable reference for antenna/microwave researchers and designers. Beginning with such novel passive components as antenna filters, antenna packaging covers, and balun filters, the book discusses various miniaturization techniques for the multifunctional antenna systems. In addition to amplifying and oscillating antennas, the book also covers design considerations for frequency- and pattern-reconfigurable antennas. The last chapter is dedicated to the field of solar cell integrated antennas. Inside, readers will find comprehensive chapters on: Compact Multifunctional Antennas in Microwave Wireless Systems Multifunctional Passive Integrated Antennas and Components Reconfigurable Antennas Receiving Amplifying Antennas Oscillating Antennas Solar cell integrated Antennas Aimed at professional engineers and researchers designing compact antennas for wireless applications, Compact Multifunctional Antennas for Wireless Systems will prove to be an invaluable tool.

The integration of high-quality (Q)-factor 3-D filters with highly efficient antennas is addressed in this dissertation. Integration of filters and antennas into inseparable units eliminates the transitions between the otherwise separate structures resulting in more compact and efficient systems. The compact, highly efficient integrated 3-D filter/antenna systems, enabled by the techniques developed herein, allow for the realization of integrated RF front ends with significantly-reduced form factors. Integration of cavity filters with slot antennas in a single planar substrate is first demonstrated. Due to the high Q factor of cavity resonators, the efficiency of the integrated filter/antenna system is found to be the same as that of a reference filter with the same filtering characteristics. This means a near 100% efficient slot antenna is achieved within this integrated filter/antenna system. To further reduce the footprint of the integrated systems, vertically integrated filter/antenna systems are developed. We then demonstrate the integration of cavity filters with aperture antenna structures which enable larger bandwidths compared with slot antennas. The enhanced bandwidths are made possible through the excitation and radiation of surface waves. To obtain omnidirectional radiation patterns, we integrate cavity filters with monopole antennas. Finally, the integration of filters with patch antennas is addressed. Unlike the other filter/antenna integration examples presented, in which the antenna is utilized as an equivalent load, the patch antenna provides an additional pole in the filtering function. The presented techniques in this dissertation can be applied for filter/antenna integration in all microwave, and millimeter-wave frequency regions.
