Collected Stories is an authoritative new translation of the complete fiction of Bruno Schulz, whose work has influenced writers as various as Salman Rushdie, Cynthia Ozick, Jonathan Safran Foer, Philip Roth, Danilo Kiš, and Roberto Bolaño. Schulz’s prose is renowned for its originality. Set largely in a fictional counterpart of his hometown of Drohobych, his stories merge the real and the surreal. The most ordinary objects—the wind, an article of clothing, a plate of fish—can suddenly appear unfathomably mysterious and capable of illuminating profound truths. As Father, one of his most intriguing characters, declaims: “Matter has been granted infinite fecundity, an inexhaustible vital force, and at the same time, a seductive power of temptation that entices us to create forms.” This comprehensive volume brings together all of Schulz's published stories—Cinnamon Shops, his most famous collection (sometimes titled The Street of Crocodiles in English), The Sanatorium under the Hourglass, and an additional four stories that he did not include in either of his collections. Madeline G. Levine’s masterful new translation shows contemporary readers how Schulz, often compared to Proust and Kafka, reveals the workings of memory and consciousness.

Rafael Sabatini (1875 - 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages. By the time he was seventeen, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language - English - to his linguistic collection. After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English. " In all, he produced thirty one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. He is best known for his world-wide bestsellers: The Sea Hawk (1915), Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922) and Bellarion the Fortunate (1926). Other famous works by Sabatini are The Lion's Skin (1911), The Strolling Saint (1913) and The Snare (1917).

"Wake Not the Dead" by Johann Ludwig Tieck is a chilling and atmospheric tale that delves into themes of obsession, ambition, and the boundaries between life and death. Set against the backdrop of a crumbling castle in the German countryside, Tieck's novella follows the ill-fated experiments of the alchemist Victor Fritz, who becomes consumed by the desire to defy the natural order and bring the dead back to life. At its core, "Wake Not the Dead" is a cautionary tale of hubris and moral decay, as Victor's reckless pursuit of forbidden knowledge leads to tragic consequences for himself and those around him. Through Tieck's vivid prose and eerie imagery, readers are drawn into a world of Gothic horror and macabre fascination, where the boundaries between the living and the dead blur and the darkest impulses of the human psyche are laid bare. As Victor delves deeper into the mysteries of life and death, he becomes increasingly isolated from society and consumed by his own hubris, ultimately leading to his downfall. Through his tragic journey, Tieck explores timeless themes of guilt, redemption, and the consequences of playing God, offering readers a haunting meditation on the dangers of unchecked ambition and the fragility of the human soul. More than just a Gothic thriller, "Wake Not the Dead" is a thought-provoking exploration of the darker aspects of human nature and the consequences of tampering with forces beyond our control. As readers immerse themselves in Tieck's atmospheric narrative, they are reminded of the timeless allure of the supernatural and the enduring power of literature to provoke fear, fascination, and reflection.

Mr. Norval: It is now four weeks since your accident. I have made inquiry of your physician whether news or business communications, however important, brought to your attention, would be detrimental to you, cause an accession of feverish symptoms or otherwise harm you. He assures me, On the contrary, he is sure you have not been for years so free from disease of any sort, with the sole exception of the broken bones, as now. This being so, I venture to approach you upon a subject which I doubt not you are quite as willing to have definitely arranged, and at once, as myself. I can say what I mean, and as I mean it, so much better on paper than in conversation-as I have so little self-possession, and am so readily put out in the matter of argument-that I have determined to write to you, thinking thus to be better able to make you understand and appreciate my reasons and motives, since you can read them when and how you choose.
