Lamb's essay, Christ's Hospital five-and-thirty Years A go,1 describes the school as seen through his eyes; the whole essay may well be read by the student. Prophetic of Cole ridge's lifelong impulsiveness and lack of balanced judgment was his attempt to escape the school, when fifteen, by appren ticing himself to a cobbler. In his days at Christ's Hospital Coleridge began to be what he always was - a good talker. In this period, too, he felt the first strong poetic enthusiasm of his life, that for the sonnets of the minor poet, William Lisle Bowles. Life at Cambridge and Marriage. - Coleridge entered Cambridge in the fall of 1791, having won a scholarship at Jesus College. He read much and talked much, but proved to be an unsteady student. He was serious at first, but ir regular later. Like Wordsworth and Southey, with whom he was afterwards to be associated, he assimilated, in his under graduate days, the generous radical enthusiasms of the French Revolutionary era, views which all three - Coleridge first - were afterwards to discard for greater conservatism. Coleridge was absent from Cambridge during the winter months of 179 3 - 94. Actuated by some sudden impulse, or because of difficulties Of some kind, he enlisted in the Fif teenth Light Dragoons, under the name of Silas Tomkyns Comberback. He made a poor dragoon. The influence on his character might perhaps have been salutary, had he re mained in service long enough to feel the effect of military regularity and discipline, qualities he was sadly to need. As it turned out, his acquaintance with Latin soon caught the attention Of his superior Officer, who procured Cole ridge's release in April, and he was reinstated at Cambridge.
