This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ...grows less. Tf this discharge continues, the gravity of the electrolyte may fall as low as 1.100 or even lower, but should never be allowed to fall this low, as when gravity reaches this point, lead sulphate forms very rapidly on the plates; the voltage of the cell becomes very low and the cell in this condition will readily freeze in cold weather. The gravity of the cell should never be allowed to drop below 1.250, and should be maintained as nearly as possible at a point between 1.275 and 1.300. The process of charge and the process of discharge should never be carried out at too high a rate as the chemical action taking place in the cell will produce a high degree of temperature and the plates will warp or buckle, allowing the active material to fall from them and to accumulate in the sediment chamber. This active material would not only mean a loss in the capacity of the plates, but would also accumulate until it might come in contact with the plates and form an internal short circuit of the cell, and the cell would immediately discharge. A storage battery should never be allowed to stand in a discharged condition as the plates will sulphate very rapidly, and sulphation is the worst enemy of the lead-acid storage battery. The process of mixing acid and water must be carried out very slowly and very carefully. Never add water to acid. Always mix water and acid by pouring the acid slowly into the water and stirring continually, as in the chemical combination of the two a large amount of heat is evolved and were you to pour the water into the acid, you might be severely injured. Acid must always be handled in porcelain, glass, earthenware or lead-lined vessels. Caution. Note this paragraph very carefully. CARE OF STORAGE BATTERIES...
