Self-help organizations across the world, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Croix D'Or, The Links, Moderation Management, Narcotics Anonymous, and SMART Recovery, have attracted tens of millions of individuals seeking to address addiction problems with drugs or alcohol. This book provides an integrative, international review of research on these organizations, focusing in particular on the critical questions of how they affect individual members and whether self-help groups and formal health care systems can work together to combat substance abuse. Keith Humphreys reviews over 500 studies into the efficacy of self-help groups as an alternative and voluntary form of treatment. In addition to offering a critical review of the international body of research in this area, he provides practical strategies for how individual clinicians and treatment systems can interact with self-help organizations in a way that improves outcomes for patients and for communities as a whole.

The Circle Of Life - The Process of Sexual Recovery Workbook (Revised: July. 2011). We discuss and work through the 12 Step recovery process. This is a stand alone workbook for working the 12 Steps for Sexual Addiction. Volume 1 is the first and only workbook for The Circle of Life series for sex addiction. Two more volumes exist for recovery from Alcoholism and Compulsive Debting/Spending. Sex addiction is a disease of the body, mind, and spirit. You may believe differently but this is the experience of many of us who are on the road to happy destiny (recovery from sex addiction). Our strength is the result of being sponsored through the 12 Steps. Our hope is in recovery from this addiction by witnessing the success of those who have gone before us. The Circle Of Life workbook was developed to help with the basics of recovery. A strong emphasis is placed on obtaining and utilizing a 12 Step program sponsor. We stress attending sexual addiction support meetings and developing a support system. The intention of this workbook is to work through the 12 Steps with a sponsor to develop an understanding of a Higher Power who will keep us sober (God as we understand God - our own concept). This workbook does not address formal religion or dogma. This process of recovery, we believe through our own experience, is spiritual in nature and change through guidance of a power greater than ourselves becomes the key to recovery. The first three chapters give information on our addiction, seeking help for recovery from sex addiction, the feelings that are associated with coming into sexual sobriety, and withdrawal from active sexual compulsive behavior. Chapters four through twelve are dedicated to working the 12 Steps. It is possible to recover from sex addiction. Recovery is possible if one has the capacity to be honest - honest with themselves and honest with their recovering friends.

"The feeling was electric-energy humming through my body. I felt like blood was pouring into areas of my tissues that it had not been able to reach for some time. It was relieving and healing, subtler than the feeling from getting off on drugs, but it was detectable and lovely, and of course, there was no hangover, just a feeling of more ease than I could remember. I felt a warmth come over me similar to what I felt when I had done heroin, but far from the darkness of that insanity, this was pure light-a way through." - Tommy Rosen, on his first yoga experience Most of us deal with addiction in some form. In addition to staying connected to our support systems and avoiding opportunities to use during the coronavirus pandemic, we can also keep confronting and conquering the self-destructive things we think and do that undercut our health and sanity. Concise advice on hunting down the personal culprits that sabotage sobriety and personal happiness. To grow in recovery, we must grow up emotionally. This means getting honest with ourselves and facing up to the self-defeating thoughts and actions that put our sobriety at risk. Although there are as many ways to mess up recovery as there are alcoholics and addicts, some general themes exist, which include: confusing self-concern with selfishness; not making amends; using the program to try to become perfect; not getting help for relationship troubles; and believing that life should be easy. In simple, down-to-earth language, Allen Berger explores the twelve most commonly confronted beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage recovery. He then provides tools for working through these problems in daily life. This useful guide offers fresh perspectives on how the process of change begins with basic self-awareness and a commitment to working a daily program.

The original small-press edition of Calling the Circle has become one of the key resources for the rapidly-growing "circle" movement. This newly revised edition brings Christina Baldwin's groundbreaking work to an even broader audience ranging from women's spirituality groups to corporate development teams. 50,000 years ago, women and men gathered around campfires to decide the key issues in their lives. Today, groups everywhere are discovering a new form of this ancient ritual for communication, mutual support, teamwork, and social change. Now, in a book as consciousness-changing as Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade or Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline, Christina Baldwin offers this powerful new tool to everyone who longs for a community based on honesty, equality, and spiritual integrity. In this simple, profound practice, participants sit in a circle, pass a talking piece from person to person, and speak and listen from the heart. Christina Baldwin gives detailed instructions and suggestions for getting started, setting goals, and solving disagreements safely and respectfully. She also offers inspiring examples of circles in action: a women's spirituality group, a father and son in crisis, a PTA group that averts a school strike and a work project team that accesses a new level of creativity and caring.
