This doctrine of the Incarnation of the Christ implies the exaltation of human nature, and the con secration of all human relations with the visible crea tion, and, in connection with the conquest of sin and death, opens up the vista of the glorious destiny of the children of God, purposed before the world was. Now, this doctrine of the Pre-incarnate Word and the Incarnate Christ, though it undoubtedly stands in the forefront of the prologue to St. John's Gospel, though it is hardly less prominent in the opening to the Epistle to the Hebrews, and though it finds special emphasis in the two great Christological passages which I have quoted from the Epistles to the Ephesians and the Colossians, and though lastly it forms the groundwork of the great Creed which is common to all the Churches, in reality, until lately, has exercised very little influence over modern thought.
