The study of Chippewa music for the Bureau of American Ethnology was begun in 1907 The material herewith presented was collected on the White Earth, Red Lake, Cass Lake, Leech Lake, and Mille Lac Reservations in Minnesota, the Lac Court Oreilles Reservation in Wisconsin, and the Manitou Rapids Reserve in Ontario, Canada, the work continuing until 1925. Excerpt from The Dream Dance of the Chippewa and Menominee Indians of Northern Wisconsin The relations existing between the Chippewa and certain other tribes belonging to the great Algonquin linguistic stock appear to have always been very cordial. With the Ottawa and Potawatomi especially their relations were intimate, apparently by virtue of the fact that these three tribes all sprang originally from the same source, as nearly as can be gathered. At present also especially friendly relations are maintained between the Wisconsin Chippewa and the small number of Potawatomi still residing in the state. More or less friendly relations appear to have existed from time immemorial between the Chippewa and the Menominee who are also an Algonquin people, though these relations were not so intimate as those of the Chippewa with the Ottawa and the Potawatomi. At the present time the relations between the Chippewa and the Menominee are very cordial. The Menominee appear to have been at all times a comparatively small tribe whose numbers probably never varied greatly from that of the present day, which is about When first encountered by whites they resided in the vicinity of the Menominee river which forms part of the boundary between Wisconsin and Michigan. They laid claim to the western shore of Lake Michigan from the mouth of Green bay to the mouth of the Milwaukee river, and inland to em brace the whole drainage basins of the Menominee and the Fox rivers. They at present reside on what is known as the Menominee reservation, on the upper course of the Wolf river, in Shawano and Oconto counties. In 1894 Wisconsin game wardens Horace Martin and Josiah Hicks were dispatched to arrest Joe White, an Ojibwe ogimaa (chief), for hunting deer out of season and off-reservation. Martin and Hicks found White and made an effort to arrest him. When White showed reluctance to go with the wardens, they started beating him; he attempted to flee, and the wardens shot him in the back, fatally wounding him. Both Martin and Hicks were charged with manslaughter in local county court, and they were tried by an all-white jury. Before invasion, Turtle Island-or North America-was home to vibrant cultures that shared long-standing philosophical precepts. The most important and wide-spread of these was the view of reality as a collaborative binary known as the Twinned Cosmos of Blood and Breath. This binary system was built on the belief that neither half of the cosmos can exist without its twin. Both halves are, therefore, necessary and good. Western anthropologists typically shorthand the Twinned Cosmos as "Sky and Earth" but this erroneously saddles it with Christian baggage and, worse, imposes a hierarchy that puts sky quite literally above earth. None of this Western ideology legitimately applies to traditional Indigenous American thought, which is about equal cooperation and the continual recreation of reality. Spirits of Blood, Spirits of Breath examines traditional historical concepts of spirituality among North American Indians both at and, to the extent it can be determined, before contact. In doing so, Barbara Alice Mann rescues the authentically indigenous ideas from Western, and especially missionary, interpretations. In addition to early European source material, she uses Indian oral traditions, traced as much as possible to their earliest versions and sources, and Indian records, including pictographs, petroglyphs, bark books, and wampum. Moreover, Mann respects each Indigenous culture as a discrete unit, rather than generalizing them as is often done in Western anthropology. To this end, she collates material in accordance with actual historical, linguistic, and traditional linkages among the groups at hand, with traditions clearly identified by group and, where recorded, by speaker. In this way she provides specialists and non-specialists alike a window into the purportedly lost, and often caricatured, world of Indigenous American thought.
