Chinese vocabulary book + Chinese dictionary This Chinese vocabulary book contains more than 3000 words and phrases which are grouped by topic to make it easier for you to pick what to learn first. On top of that, the index in the second half of the book provides you with a basic Chinese-English as well as English-Chinese dictionary which makes this a great resource for learners of all levels. What you can expect from this book: This Chinese learning resource is a combination of Chinese vocabulary book and a two-way basic Chinese dictionary: Part 1 - Topic based Chinese vocabulary book: This is the main part of the book and represents a list of chapters each containing Chinese vocabularies for a certain topic. The Chinese vocabularies in the chapters are unsorted on purpose to separate remembering them from a defined alphabetical order. You can start at any chapter and dive directly into the topics that interest you the most. Part 2 - Basic English-Chinese dictionary: The index in the second half of the book can be used as a basic Chinese dictionary to look up words you have learned but can't remember or learn new words you need. Part 3 - Basic Chinese-English dictionary: Easy to use and with just the right amount of words, this third part finishes off with a second index that allows you to look for Chinese words and directly find the English translation How to use this Chinese vocabulary book: Not sure where to start? We suggest you first work your way through the verbs, adjectives and phrases chapters in part one of the book. This will give you a great base for further studying and already enough vocabulary for basic communication. The Chinese dictionaries in part two and three can be used whenever needed to look up words you hear on the street, English words you want to know the Chinese translation for or simply to learn some new words. Some final thoughts: Vocabulary books have been around for centuries and as with so many things that have been around for some time, they are not very fashionable and a bit boring, but they usually work very well. Together with the basic Chinese dictionary parts, this vocabulary book is a great resource to support you throughout the process of learning Chinese and comes in particularly handy at times when there is no internet to look up words and phrases.

This book lists approximately 4,800 core English words with standard Chinese (Mandarin) equivalents including standard American pronunciation. Main entries are in English alphabetically with standard American pronunciation with focus on stressed syllable*in bold print.. In the next line, pasts of speech label ([n.] for nouns and [v.] for verbs) and the entry’s Chinese equivalents in Pinyin (Romanized standard Chinese pronunciation) followed by Chinese characters (both simplified and traditional if applicable). A syllable is part of a word that contains one vowel sound. In every word of two or more syllables, one syllable is stressed. It’s called ‘stressed syllable’. The vowel sound in that syllable is louder, higher in pitch, and longer than the other vowel sounds in the same word. The contrast between stressed and unstressed syllables is very important because it helps to create the rhythm of English. The native English speakers rely more on stressed syllable to understand what you say than on the individual sounds of the word. This book is ideal for learners of English as a second language who want to communicate more effectively and also for learners of Chinese who know English. The usual approach to expanding vocabulary is to use a topic /situation based technique. This works well if the topics/situations are ones that the student may use, or is interested in them. However it is by its nature random in the choice of words it introduces and furthermore the problem of how the student can quickly learn how to write all these different characters is never seriously addressed. There are however, other approaches that could be used, that could offer the student a better investment on the time they spend, but up to now they have not been explored by Teachers, This book introduces one such approach, by looking at and understanding repetition in Mandarin Chinese. This book will not be looking at repetition as in 爸爸妈妈 or in phrases such as 多多少少 etc What we will be focusing on is repetition of meaning in a word that uses two different characters in Chinese. We think this could open up new ways of thinking about the language for students studying Chinese.
