During the Cold War, the People's Republic of China used Switzerland as headquarters for its economic, political, intelligence, and cultural networks in Europe. Based on extensive research in Western and Chinese archives, China's European Headquarters charts not only how Switzerland came to play this role, but also how Chinese networks were built in practice, often beyond the public face of official proclamations and diplomatic interactions. By tracing the development of Sino-Swiss relations in the Cold War, Ariane Knüsel sheds new light on the People's Republic of China's formulation and implementation of foreign policy in Europe, Latin America and Africa and Switzerland's efforts to align neutrality, humanitarian engagement, and economic interests.

This volume brings together a group of leading international scholars to discuss how US-China-EU relations will shape the future of international politics. Arguing that these three powers will play a key role in establishing and managing a new world order, the contributors examine how a future global order is developed by the interaction of these leading actors in the international system. The authors also address how the US, China and the EU promote cooperation and manage conflict of interests on a wide spectrum of issues including new security challenges. By linking the management of international affairs to specific policy issues, the book shows that the US-China-EU triangular configuration is a pivotal relationship for understanding contemporary international relations. This book offers a comprehensive assessment of US-China-EU interactions and will be of great interest to students of Asian politics, US foreign policy, EU politics and security studies and IR in general. Robert S. Ross is Professor of Political Science at Boston College, Associate, John King Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University, Associated Professor at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, Senior Advisor, Security Studies Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Øystein Tunsjø is Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies. Zhang Tuosheng is director of the research department and senior fellow at the China Foundation for International and Strategic Studies.

• Chinese companies have completed various different transactions with Spanish companies in 2010. • There is now an opportunity to encourage some of these Chinese companies to set up their European headquarters in Spain. • Spain could position itself as a corporate hub for Chinese companies seeking to expand in Europe as well as in Latin America. • Specific actions and results could be achieved in the short term with three companies (Sinopec, BYD and Chery), as well as with the sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation (CIC). All of these organisations are weighing their options for setting up regional headquarters in Europe. • China Unicom and CITIC also present short-term possibilities, as they have privileged relationships with Telefónica and BBVA. Both companies are considering moving their European headquarters from London to Madrid. • In the medium term, Spain could seek further results with the oil companies CNPC and CNOOC, with the automaker Geely, and in particular with the high-tech companies Huawei and ZTE. • In these efforts, the following Spanish companies could play a key role: Repsol with Sinopec; Bergé with BYD and Chery; BBVA with CIC and CITIC Securities; and Telefónica with Huawei, ZTE and China Unicom.
