Mr. Fool Moves the Mountain is one of China's most widely known, highly regarded stories. It was a favorite of Chairman Mao's, and he often quoted from it. Mr. Fool Moves the Mountain is from the Mead-Hill collection, China Tales and Stories. It is a kind of moral tale telling a charming and timeless story of faith, optimism, determination, perseverance, and hard work. Mr. Fool reminds us of that universal premise: persistence overcomes adversity. At the same time, Mr. Fool Moves the Mountain has given rise to one of the most beloved characters in Chinese folk literature. So widely known is he, in fact, that nowadays simply describing someone as a “Mr. Fool” is to pay a highly intelligent - if complicated - compliment. Mr. Fool's tale has been told and retold so many times that he has become almost more famous than a hero - almost an archetype, in fact. In that way, Mr. Fool has even become part of China thinking itself. (For more about that idea, please see Mead-Hill's, China Thinking - An Introduction.) Mr. Fool Moves the Mountain is published in multiple Mead-Hill editions. Each edition is illustrated by a different artist. Each artist uses a different style of Chinese illustration. This book presents a comprehensive and systematic study of the narrative history and narrative methods of Chinese and Western popular fiction from the perspectives of narratology, comparative literature, and art and literature studies by adopting the methodology of parallel comparison. The book is a pioneering work that systematically investigates the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western popular fiction, and traces the root causes leading to the differences. By means of narrative comparison, it explores the conceptual and spiritual correlations and differences between Chinese and Western popular fiction and, by relating them to the root causes of cultural spirit, allows us to gain an insight into the cultural heritage of different nations. The book is structured in line with a cause-and-effect logical sequence and moves from the macroscopic to the microscopic, from history to reality, and from theory to practice. The integration of macro-level theoretical studies and micro-level case studies is both novel and effective. This book was awarded Second Prize at the Sixth Outstanding Achievement Awards in Scientific Research for Chinese Institutions of Higher Learning (Humanities & Social Sciences, 2013).

Stories to Caution the World is the first complete translation of Jingshi tongyan, the second of Feng Menglong's three collections of stories which were pivotal in the development of Chinese vernacular fiction. These tales, whose importance in the Chinese literary canon and in world literature is without question, have been compared to Boccaccio's Decameron and the stories of A Thousand and One Nights. Peopled with scholars, emperors, ministers, generals, and a gallery of ordinary men and women in their everyday surroundings -- merchants and artisans, prostitutes and courtesans, matchmakers and fortune-tellers, monks and nuns, servants and maids, thieves and imposters -- the stories in this collection provide a vivid panorama of the bustling world of imperial China before the end of the Ming dynasty. Feng Menglong collected popular stories from a variety of sources (some dating back centuries) and circulated them via the flourishing seventeenth-century publishing industry. He not only saved them from oblivion but elevated the status of vernacular literature and provided material for authors of the great late-Ming and Qing novels to draw upon. As in their translation of the first collection of Feng's trilogy, Stories Old and New, Shuhui and Yunqin Yang include all forty stories as well as Feng's interlinear and marginal comments and all of the verse woven throughout the stories.
