Excerpt from Chateau in Brittany The attack of Europe by way of a fresh point of entry leads to disillusion, and the conviction that experience teaches nine tenths of us very little. Forgetting how scant a knowledge we have acquired of Dover, Calais, Newhaven, or Dieppe, we await the revelations of Cherbourg with an expectation that speaks ill for our intelligence. No sooner has the soul triumphed over the humiliating physical revolt at the freedom with which the waves disregard our comfort, than it recoups itself by soaring into imaginary realms where coming delights wear a golden halo of mystery. In the event, what actually happens is the usual and commonplace. There comes a night wherein affrighted sleep flees before the jerky pounding of a donkey engine. Flying feet along the corridors, dragging noises and shuffling progresses above our heads, quick sharp voices of command help to hinder our capturing the shy fugitive, till worn out in the fruitless effort we welcome the summons that calls us forth hours earlier than is our wont. Excerpt from Anne of Brittany: The Story of a Duchess and Twice-Crowned Queen Is it a fulfillment of her own prophecy that since she was a Breton and a foreign queen, she would not long be remembered by the French people? The reason then for this volume is plain: to fill a gap in our book shelves on a neglected subject, and to share with others the pleasure and interest of knowing intimately the life story of one of the world's great women. Excerpt from Rambles in Brittany The book is a record of many journeys and many rambles by road and rail around the coast, and in no sense is it put forth either as a special or as a complete survey Of things and matters Breton. Many lights and shadows have been thrown upon the screen from various points, but the effort has been made to blend them all into a pleasing whole, which 'shall supplement the guide-books Of convention. It were not possible to do more than has been attempted within the limits Of a volume such as this, and therefore many details of routes, and historical data Of a relative sort, and a certain amount of topographical information have been scattered through the volume or placed in the appendix, in the belief that such information is greatly needed in a work at tempting to purvey travel talk, even in small measure. Excerpt from Brittany Its Byways: Some Account of Its Inhabitants and Its Antiquities; During a Residence in That Country Henry II. Held his court in the castle with his empress-mother in great splendour; it had formerly been tenanted by Duke William of Normandy be fore his invasion of England, and, within its enolo sure, he built a church also, in consequence of a vow made during a serious illness. There are few objects of interest in the town of Cherbourg. The women all wear the large Normandy cap. In the Place d'armes is a bronze equestrian statue of the Emperor Napoleon I., and on the pedestal is in scribed J'avois resolu de renouveler a Cherbourg les merveilles de l'egypte. In the Library is a curiously sculptured chimney-piece of the fifteenth century, coloured and gilt, removed from a room of the abbey. The principal church, La Trinite, is a strange jumble of architecture. There is some beau tiful tracery in the windows, and a fine boss (clef pen dante) in the south porch, now restored. On a board in the church is an inscription, setting forth it was built in consequence of a voeu solennel des habitans de Cherbourg en 1450 de la delivrance de la domina tion etrangere - that is, from the English, whose de feat the same year at Formigny, by the Constable de Richemont, expelled them for ever from Normandy. Excerpt from Castles and Chateaux of Old Touraine and the Loire CountryThis book is not the result of ordinary conventional rambles, of sightseeing by day, and flying by night, but rather of leisurely wanderings, for a somewhat extended period, along the banks of the Loire and its tributaries and through the countryside dotted with those splendid monuments of Renaissance architecture which have perhaps a more appealing interest for strangers than any other similar edifices wherever found. Before this book was projected, the conventional tour of the chateau country had been "done," Baedeker, Joanne and James's "Little Tour" in hand. On another occasion Angers, with its almost inconceivably real castellated fortress, and Nantes, with its memories of the "Edict" and "La Duchessc Anne," had been tasted and digested en route to a certain little artist's village in Brittany.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
