Excerpt from Chapters on the Natural History of the United States It will be observed that quite a large number of the illustra tions are reproduced from photographs of living animals of va rions species and kinds. These were all taken by myself from the living subjects, and nearly in every instance of natural size. Too much cannot be said in favor of the constant use of the photographic camera in zoology, and when by its means really first-rate, life-like pictures of any of our living forms are secured in natural attitudes, and with nature's surroundings, they should surely be published, and be made to take the place Of many of the highly incorrect figures Of our animals, still to be found in popular works upon natural history. Taxidermists and artists will then, I am sure, appreciate this feature in my book, for if anything be useful and helpful to them in their work it is good pictures of this class, used, as they safely can be, as models. Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.

Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee Of Eight Of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors Of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment Of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially Of those within the comprehension Of the pupil Of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases Of the political and military history Of the country must be reserved for later study. Excerpt from Country Cousins: Short Studies in the Natural History of the United States But, bless you! My repeated whacks, littering the whole neighbor hood with chips (which already had attracted a swarm of carpenter bees), seemed to have no more effect than would the cracking of hickory-nuts at the base of Pompey's Pillar. The harder I worked, the more I sweat; and the oftener a blow went wild the more that wicked neighbor of mine hugged himself with glee, and exasperated me by personal remarks and unfounded encouragement. Excerpt from A School History of the United States The object aimed at in the preparation of this book was to produce a systematic, brief, clear, and authentic history of the United States for the use of schools. The plan is simple. N o arbitrary division into historical periods and eras is employed, but each chapter embraces associated events and forms a natural link in an unbroken chain. A strictly chronological order of arrangement is followed, whereby occurrences are shown in their true relation to one another, and to their causes. The most important dates are made prominent in the text by a peculiar type. A condensed record of general progress is placed at the end of almost every chapter, designed to interest the pupil in the civil and domestic character of the country, and in employments, institutions, and ideas not directly connected with wars, politics, or national legislation.
