Excerpt from The Cause and Cure of Crime HE invitation to publish this book fur nishes an occasion for urging afresh the improvement of our city police stations and county jails, which were so severely condemned by the last International Prison Congress. The nation which originated the Reforinatory and the Juvenile Court, and which has devel oped the parole system and probation of adults, has yet to learn and feel how its honor is sullied by our local prisons. Recent discus sions and experience require new emphasis on psychological laboratories in schools, courts, reformatories, and prisons; on work colonies for alcoholics and degraded misdemeanants; on a better legal basis for prison regulations; on reform of the police to save them from corruption in unholy alliance with the social evil, and to train them for the fine calling of prevention of crime; and on the readjustment of the criminal law and procedure to make them conform to the requirements of modern knowledge of the criminal character. Excerpt from The Criminal Classes, Causes and Cures In the preparation of this work, it has been the design of the author, and the expressed purpose of the publisher, to make a popular book - a book in language, style, and compass within the grasp of the common reader. The aim has also been to present a book full of interest and information for the more careful student of sociology, psychology, and criminology. In a book, however, of the size presented, it must not be expected that exhaustive treatises be given on any or all of the several types of criminal life, or upon the causes and cures thereof. Much important matter, therefore, for the complete study of the subject must be omitted here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Crime Its Causes and Remedy I. In the course of an address on "Punishment and Reformation," delivered at the London meeting of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, in 1862, Sir Thomas Chambers, then Common Sergeant of London, gave utterance to the following thoughtful remarks: "Reasoners and moralists may dispute, yet philanthropists need not delay to act, and the problems insoluble by argument may be settled conclusively by practice. It may be (I rather incline to that opinion) that the State has nothing to do with the individual except in his bearing on the welfare of society, that any interference with him on other than public grounds is objectionable, and that this doctrine is applicable both to those who obey and those who infringe the laws. Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a work of criminology by author and Professor of Criminal Anthropology, Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso was a professor at the Italian University of Turin, and thus all of his works were written in Italian. This book, translated by Henry P. Horton, was not released in English until after Lombroso's death. It was selected by the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology for translation and deemed vitally important in the understanding of crime and criminals. Part one examines the factors that contribute to crime, paying more attention to the individual than to environmental factors. Part two looks at ways in which crime can be reduced and avoided, highlighting both effective and ineffective measures that have been used. Part three applies the lessons of the first two parts to propose a detailed system for dealing with crime and criminals, from the penalties that criminals should face to the appropriate institutions they should be held in. If nothing else, Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a case study on how far a field of science can progress in 100 years. Much of the content of this book is hopelessly out of date and many of the theories forwarded in this book would be highly controversial if presented today, including equating epileptics and criminals, and the heavy reliance on racial profiling. This book is valuable mostly for the historical insights it provides into criminology and moral attitudes rather than as a source of textbook knowledge about the subject. Excerpt from The Treatment of Crime It requires no philosopher to inform us that the punish ment of the crime rarely cures the criminal. It would seem to be a self-evident proposition that what is needed is not so much punishment of the crime, though this be necessary, as the reformation of the criminal. Excerpt from Efficient Causes of Crime Crime, then, is more than a mere accompaniment of de fective mind. It is the natural outgrowth of faulty mental processes. This doubtless accounts for the fact that punish ment can not cure the criminal, nor even deter others from committing crimes. It is foolish to insist that punishment deters the criminal even from repeating his crimes. Surely there is no fact more clearly proven to the criminologist than this one. Institutions of punishment only serve to augment the anti-social attitude of the criminal and to return him to society even determined to perpetrate more daring crimes than he had known before. Statistics from investigators the world over call our attention to the fact that crime among us is increasing at a very rapid rate. Treatment, not punish ment, is what is needed, intelligent, sympathetic and scientific treatment under the best conditions and by the best advised scientists that can be secured for the work. This is not a call for the introduction of sentimentality; there are indications in many quarters that we have too much of the maudlin already. Warden Francis insists that the great est menace to our progress in institution affairs today is the long-haired man and the short-haired woman, and he is right. Instead of indulging in expressions of sentimental regard for the unfortunate offenders, society should rather give herself to the most careful investigation of those tolerated and even encouraged practices which everywhere are shown to be those agencies that contribute to the perpetuity and to the multiplication of the criminal class. Excerpt from The Cause and Cure of Crime The emphasis of Professor Henderson upon the fact that crime is not a disease is refreshing in view of many recent utterances, and indicates the sane view of the author upon the cause and cure of crime. This little book is offered in the expectation that it may present an outline of the problems and at the same time offer some suggestions to police officers, students, and members of courts on the matter of jails, influences of surroundings, and lack of education and right home conditions upon the creation of criminals. The well-known work of the author, Prison Reform and Criminal Law, should make this book equally welcome.
